Ok you are a manager from outside the county and you are taking charge of an intercounty team. You are starting fresh in picking new players and you have no bias towards county boards etc. You are not picking players because they are someones son or related to previous star. How do you distinquish what players are good enough to be on the intercounty scene? What would you look for? How do you know this player is good enough in the first place? How would judge a player? Underage success?

I would look at underage, but dnt take it as a given,as many talents are overlooked at minor due to club bias.

Know what system you aim to play.
Get the best guys suited to that system, not always the best players.

Start with a clean slate, dont discard a guy not deemed up to it by a previous manager.

Must have a strong charcter, and temperament. When u drawing an extended list to begin with, take names from knowlegeble gaa men,in touch with the club scence.

But then you judge them yourself,in real games, training what the eye can c.

Look at old matches within the last year, on tape and c of the current team, the weakness and strengths of them in those games, did u think they were played in their best poisiton, and would they be suited for u.

Example,if the new cork man wants to play a fast, fluid ,high tempo game, kissane, canty,o neill and alan o connor wnt do.And you only have to look at last years games on tape to c that.

Go to as many games as u can,and keep the air to the ground.

Be bold, radical and brave.Forget reputations, deal with the here and now.

Speed is the key, the speed of intercounty football or hurling is a big step from club games. Speed of thought and physical speed as well, being a heads up player, finding passes, and excellent overall skills

Holding trials, you would look for players that have all the skills, and have a mastery of them through doing small sided game trials. For example, I used to be involved with underage camogie development squads, so we used play 10 a side or less games with the girls each given a jersey with a number. We noted any players who stood out, giving them one tick. If we felt the player was strong, had good skill level and could strike the ball well, pick it up easily etc, we gave two ticks; any player who could use both sides with mastery, good to excellent overall skill. We then collated that data from all selectors - any data from a selector relating to a player form their own cub was deleted.

You'd need to be getting to a lot of club games as well, and be very fluid with players initially, because you could have one fella who is an absolute star with his club, but could be rubbish at trials simply because of nerves, and it has happened a few times with our squad, that players were standing out constantly in club games, but were very poor when it came to trial games.

As well as looking at the skill set, you have to look at the players commitment - all the players will have to commit 100% and give 100%. Talk to club coaches about players, watch them with your selectors.

Probably the biggest thing to look at it and bear in mind is that each player is unique - you can have certain players going through slumps, but if you try to get to know players personally as well as being part of the squad.
