What happens the attendance register?

Something I've always wondered. It's a long time since I was in school, but in primary, the teacher would call out names (in Irish), we'd answer & then a boy would be sent to the headmasters office with the book.

In secondary as we had a different teacher for each class, the first couple of minutes of each class would be the calling of the names again and afaik remember, each individual teacher kept their own register.

Is it still done that way and if so, what happens after its done?

Yes, and no. Many schools now have the eportal. When I was class head the kids would arrive in at 9am, I'd call their names out and tick off their names on the eportal on my laptop. I'd then 'send' that electronically to reception, and they'd go on to their first class. All kids who came after that was received by reception had to report to the office as 'late'.

As for class roll calls, many teachers still do it and it's perhaps wise to do so in case there is a fire etc. It's also a decent enough tool to get the students to settle down when they arrive. However, I don't do it because everybody has their seat and I'd spot quickly enough if somebody isn't in.

    All done electronically now.

    We use VS Ware.
Takes about 30s and it's done every class.

It seems secondary school systems are far ahead of the primary school leabhair rollaí. The ancient roll books still have to be filled in by hand every morning!

In secondary. We take them for every class on the PC. It is very useful as you can see straight away if someone was out earlier in the day etc. Also excellent for monitoring time keeping.

We have eportal but the old roll books still have to be filled in in the mornings. Not sure if this is a legacy VEC thing or what? Its a pain coz you have to take the roll twice in the tutorial once on paper then input it into eportal.

Same for us Musicmental. It's a real pain.

In my school (secondary) we take the roll on e-portal in each class. We have an automatic dialler system that rings the house of any absent student once the roll is in, and I think keeps ringing until someone answers.

We also keep our own roll book. Necessary for fire drill/real emergency to take roll call outside to make sure everyone is present.
