Gay Irish Gamers

Dedicated thread to the LGBT gamers group we are trying to set up, well it's just me at the moment with supportive comments via twitter, boards and facebook, but hope to get some other people invovled in the organising ASAP.

We're on Facebook, Twitter (@gayirishgamers) and Steam. Dear god will somebody please start some chatter on the Facebook page?! :D

There is no set vision at the moment, I just thought a LGBT gamers group would be a nice initiative. Organising meet ups, gaming or going to cons and other events would be the most obvious starting point. It can also be a platform to organise online gaming if anyone is into MMORPGs or other multiplayer gamers. As well as a space for general discussion.

I would like to organise first meet up for September. I am also hoping to go to Nom Con (Anime Con Aug 30th - 1st. Sept.). So if people want to meet up for a chat there that would also be great (I will probably be on my own :().

I would like the first meet up to be quite social, the two most obvious options being drinks in Dublin or we could try get a space in the outhouse and bring a few consoles. LAN parties and all that are definitely events that I would like to organise but lets start of simple.

So over to you . . . join, share, like and get the discussion going across twitter, facebook etc.

Tell me your ideas, what we should be doing, let me know if you're interested in getting involved. You could also try to organise some online gaming here or just have a general discussion about what you're playing, reading, watching and general gay-nerd issues.

I will be honest, it's critical that other people get on board with the organising and promotion for this to be anyway successful. It's not (just) laziness on my behalf, I am not living in Dublin long term. My knowledge of the gaming scene is non existent, I am not invovled with any LGBT groups and I haven't organised a LAN party since Age of Empires was cutting edge (the worst part, I don't really care for Dr. Who either)

So if you're really enthusiastic and interested, I have created a dedicated email address (gayirishgamers@gmail.com) so send an email with some details.

I am going to be as hands off as possible, I am a facilitator not a leader.

Confession: I have no idea what a lan is :pac:

Congrats on taking the initiative to start this yoke up, sounds like a really fun idea. I'd really only be interested in casual or retro gaming events myself, maybe casual tournaments in the likes of Mario Kart etc.

Are you open to card based and tabletop games too or is it just videogames? Gay Jenga anyone? haha

    me neither :o
Fair play to you Guyanachronism for taking this initiative.
Not sure if I would be able to help you (living in Drogheda, I am a very casual player, don't know much about gaming), but you'll definitely have my psycjological support.

    Cheers

    Y'all noobs! :pac:

LAN = Local Area Network - basically multiplayer gaming without using the internet.

There was an article about Gaymers in GCN. Not the most informed article but a decent read.

Anyone going to Nom Con this weekend? I will probably go on Saturday to get some merch and might stick around to see Battleship Yamato live action movie. I hope there isn't any problems with getting tickets at the door like at Comic Con. There will be a games room, Halo 4 and fighting games competition as well as pokemon cards.

I also think an evening of party Games like Mario Kart would be great as an event for GIG. I haven't actually made any progress in organising anything in the mean time, I just post the occasional article to Facebook and Twitter.

Also anyone like the book Enders Game? I only read it recently and thought it was very good, but the author Orson Scott Card is a lunatic so gay nerds and associated groups have been calling for a boycott of the big budget movie when it comes out October/November.

The response has been underwhelming to say the least. I was hoping that people would start disussions and be brimming with ideas themselves. When there is a bit of a buzz, it would be easier to get some events going.

I don't have a lot of time or resources to invest but if people want this to a be thing, best to start by joining the group on facebook, link friends and getting a discussion going.

I was added to a FB gay geeks group and I am thinking of posting about GIG there, but it's majority americans and they tend to be more interested in posting NSFW stuff than geeky discussions.

Came across this thread from Computer games thread, as it popped up on the main page. I'd advise asking over at the LAN forum on info for setting up your own LAN.

TBH, the best idea would probably to set up a regular event (sort of like the fight events that set up), with a console on a weekday? Doing it in the Outhouse would ensure that you get the LGBT community engaged, but also find like minded LGBT individuals in a comfortable setting.

I'd love to be more involved but at the mo I can't afford xbox live so I can't even game online at home any more! :(

Hey. Just joined this on steam a few days ago. Nice to finally find some fellow gay gamers. Mainly a pc gamer so if anyone is up for some games over steam give me a shout over there :)

I am feeling revitalised about getting things moving. Anyone got experience with the outhouse, particularly regarding costs? I've never actually gone to an event there, just grabbed a coffee. I can send them an email anyway and see, but people will most likely have to provide TVs and consoles for any meet up. It would be great to get the theatre and play Mario kart or something simple n fun on the big screen. Ha their website lists LGBT trekkies as a group that has used the outhouse, if they can establish themselves . . .

If you're interested in arranging a time and place to meet for drinks, please post, you can also DM me or email gayirishgamers@gmail.com (if you have done so, a few have, I am sorry that I haven't responded yet). I would like to get an idea of numbers who are interested.

    Anyone going to Eirtakon?

I suppose I should encourage people to also to observe the boycott of Enders Game, although I really want to go.

Not really sure what the outhouse is or where it is. I also dont have a console. But i can come along to eat all the pizza no worries ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,148 ✭✭✭Daith

I'd be up for it. You could just have a meetup for coffee/beer whatever for people who into gaming anyway. Swap Xbox live ids/ steam ids etc then go from there.

I can't remember if Outhouse have TVs to rent. I remember going to one that used a projector but cant remember if someone brought that with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,512 ✭✭✭baby and crumble

I've been to stuff in Outhouse, I know the room rental is pretty minimal, I think its like a tenner an hour or something, so if everyone chucked €2 or something thatd cover costs. Not sure about the tvs, but I wouldn't mind bringing a console and games- I have an xbox 360 and a wii in my house but a few other consoles in storage that I could dig out:

    NES
    PS 1
    PS 2
    Gamecube
    Dreamcast

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,316 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

The Red Room is €10 an hour.

The Theatre is €15 an hour, but comes with a projector .

Now, before you think the projector is great, look into the specs. If organising any sort of fast-paced multiplayer game, the projector may be too slow to keep up, and show "ghosting".

Maybe an idea to ask if they hold such events at the moment on www.facebook.com/outhouse.ie as it may be a more low key affair, and/or not so regular?

What about a Vent or TS for gamers to chat over?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 220 ✭✭Guyanachronism

If we say a time and place for meet up, will at least a handful of people come? It would just be a few quiet orange juices in some bar in Dublin on a weeknight. I am not really in a position to book a room in the outhouse, promote the event on the ground and just hope enough people turn up to cover the costs. So let starts with something simple.

The other thing at the moment is setting up a private group (not to be elitish just secure) on facebook, the question is whether you trust sending me your email adresses at this point so I can add you. If you have followed the group on twitter, facebook (page not group) or steam. It's probably quite easy to identify me anyway.

I am possibly the worst person to be trying to set this up, (I blame impulsive behaviour due to sugar highs). I am only living in Dublin until mid December and I am emigrating next year, so if peope are interested in establishing this in the real world, we need to get things moving.

If we say Thursday 7th November at 7pm in a Dublin city centre bar (I am thinking Sweetmans, Longstone, Thomas house or Cassisdys). Who is interested in coming along?

So please express your interest and choice of watering hole.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,148 ✭✭✭Daith

Yeah count me in anyway for some pints and gaming talk :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,512 ✭✭✭baby and crumble

Yeah I'd be up for a drink somewhere- during the week is my preferred time too so that works well. :)

I like Sweetmans. The Bank is nice too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 Paularius

Can come too but cant stay long as im up early on the friday.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 220 ✭✭Guyanachronism

So the 7th of November at 7pm suits people? I will start promoting it. I am still debating locations though. Sweetmans more central and €4 pints of the housebrew and other offers. Longstone has a really cool decor, more seats and tends to be quieter than Sweetmans. I don't intend to book a group at the moment if it's going to be less than 10 people.

I have TS software on my netbook but I have no idea how to go about setting up a group or server for it.

The venue dosnt bother me too much. I'll just google what ever is chosen for directions. Should be fine aslong as its easy to get too.

The TS would be great but if no one else is interested in it then theirs no need to worry over it just for me.

Why would anyone want to have an event for gay gamers which excludes anyone who is not gay?

What we need is more inclusion and less and less creating a situations where gay guys exclude anyone else.

Mysteryhour Please desist in trolling the forum. Posters do not have to justify themselves

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Also is anyone getting the new batman game? Dying to play it now but will wait till i get home from college or i'll end up taking a sick day :p

    Hey,

Are people still up for a few drinks Thursday?

The Longstone Pub 11 Townsend St. Dublin 2.

    Thursday 7/11 from 7pm

I will be there from a bit before 7pm. I am very laid back and approachable (or so I like to think). I will think of something simple but nerdy to have with me so you can pick me out easily without me having to post a description of myself online.

If you have any questions direct message me. Goes without saying all welcome, no outing, it's not intended for picking people up etc.

The only agenda I have would be to ask people to be mods and get invovled in online promotion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,148 ✭✭✭Daith

I should be there anyway mixing nerdy gaymer discussion and possible outrage at the same sex referendum discussion from tomorrow :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 Paularius

Will do my best to make it. Will depend on the weather and if i miss my bus. Got a test on friday morning so wont be staying longer than an hour.
If i dont make it i hope you guys have a fun night out :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 220 ✭✭Guyanachronism

Hey, if people are coming along this evening for a few drinks to avoid stereotyping or awkward staring, I will leave my copy of Lord of the Rings on the table (it's the 3 books in 1) and I am a red head, you can't miss me.

    See you this evening.
