Had a prospective client call me this morning and he has a disability following an an accident. He wants to start farming as he is coming into a few acres through inheritance and wants to farm.

Anyone know if there are grants available to him? or from where?

    Thank you.

If he is on disability would there not be questions if he started farming?

Going to run it through his spouses name for tax reasons.

It said there are grants there for employers to take him on - up to 60% of the wages.

What disability payment is he on ?

If it's Disability Allowance, he can earn €120 per week without it affecting his payment (That's €6240 per year).

If he's on Invalidity pension or Illness benefit, he has to be assessed by Social Welfare before he begins. If his disabilty is severe, he could be offered 100% of his current payment and allowed to earn as much as he likes while farming. If disability is less severe, he could be offered 75%, 50% 25% or 0%.

I'd advise against working and claiming on the sly. It's illegal (but that doesn't stop many). There is also the fact of a nosey neighbour who could report him and he'd end up with nothing at all and having to back pay any payments. There's a nosey neighbour / dogooder in every townland.

There's a business start up grant specifically for people with disabilities from Social Welfare. It is administered by the Employment Facilitator. (Cathy Moran in North Westmeath).

There is also the possibility of equipment adaptation grants from FAS.

There is also a PRSI exemption for people with a disability which is specific enough, but maybe he could get it.

There are other bits and pieces out there. Knowing his payment type would be the best help.
