I always sell off my weanlings at 11 months in full. This year am going keeping 10 or bullocks and the plan is to finish them to 30 months. What age is the best time to squeeze them ?

A lot of people think if you are keeping them to castrate while still on the cows. The thinking is as the calf as access to milk it is less stressful and he recieves little or no setback. Make sure to do for worms(lungworm) before as stress may bring on peunomia. I use either an oral drench or levicide pour on. If you have treared for worms recently just give a shot oF ivermectin and wait a few days. If you had them on a bit of nuts it helps as well.

+1 on that. I kept 5 weanlings that were a bit young two years ago and squeezed them when they were weaned in the shed and had two with pneumonia. Lesson learned.

any bull calf to be kept will be squeezed 2 weeks before they are weaned/housed .... they seem to take it in their stride whilst on the cow[/QUOTE]

This is the way we'd be doing it. Make sure your tetanus shot is up to date if the weanlings are strong.

    Hi Biz,

yep sorry all calves get covexin 8 , 5ml followed by 2ml booster 6wks later and they would have got the 2nd shot before I squeeze them but TBH I thought that the tetanus was more important if banding

Yeah, you're right about the banding, but I it's recommended when squeezing strong weanlings too.
