A security company has suspended an employee who told two Muslim women that they could not pray in a Dublin park.
The incident happened at Griffith Park in Drumcondra.
Security company Manguard Plus, which enforces park by-laws on Dublin City Council's behalf, has apologised unreservedly.
Managing Director of Manguard Plus Bill Brown denied the women were told they needed a permit to pray, but said they were asked to move on.
He said he had a meeting this morning with the worker who approached two women.
Mr Brown said the worker came to him at around 9.30am and recounted what had happened.
It was then decided that the worker should be suspended pending further investigation.
Mr Brown said he had contacted the Irish Examiner newspaper this morning in order to try to get in contact with the women in question.
He said he wanted to listen to what they had to say and to ensure that they felt their views had been heard.

Man suspened after telling the two women they cant pray in the park, health & safety and all that was said on the radio today,What you think AH should they have been allowed to pray ?

I don't see any problem with it myself, what ever rocks your boat.

Would he feel safe praying in a Christian manner in a Muslim country?

We'r getting carried away with this human rights carry on. There's a man out of work now because of red tape and political correctness.

That's completely irrelevant to be perfectly blunt.

They are not harming anyone so i'd say let them pray all they like. In regards to the suspension of the employee in the security park firm, i think a suspension was over the top, a caution would have sufficed.

We shouldn't really aspire to the standards of some of the other countries you have in mind.

Isn't Ireland supposed to be a country who respects all religions and a supporter of multiculturalism etc?

Whats that to do with anything?

Damn right. Less human rights, more misery, repression and crap.

if that's the case, then the Parkie should have been honest: no prying becuase you're Muslim and I'm a bigot. None of this "you might hurt your backs" crap.

If you're gonna go down the Human Rights denial road, then stick to this society and call a spade a spade.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

So seemingly the worker told them to stop praying in case they injured themselves and then would presumably sue the council.

Either horrific training by the private security firm, stupid arse covering policies by the council or a bit of good old fashioned bigotry from the worker concerned. Which one is to blame? Place your bets here.

Praying in parks one day; the next on footpaths.
Is there no church these women could go like the rest of us.

They should have been allowed to pray. I think suspending him was a bit OTT, but I'll reserve final judgement until I know exactly how he told them they can't pray there.

He was wrong, company has disciplined him appropriately and apologised to the people affected. Pretty well handled I think.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

The bigger picture with not allowing kids to play football is that while playing football you have many folks in the game and running all over the park after the ball and not much room for other walkers to move freely.

It's a hell of a lot different when a few folks are just sitting there praying minding their own business not obstructing anyone.

Well Wacker did ask, and people were only answering his question - while also showing him how his seeming suspicion that anyone who is an atheist supports people being forbidden to pray... is incorrect.

The fashion of assuming any atheist at all is a smug, arrogant one is getting really boring now.

I'm an atheist, I think people should be allowed to pray, and I think comments like this are stupid.

There's a man out of work now because he was clearly unsuited to his job, He had some cheek to talk to those women like that, Ignorance of the highest order, How could he be so thick as to think the women would believe that they couldn't pray there.. Fool probably thought because they were foreigners that he could pull the wool over their eyes and intimidate them, Well his thickness rebounded on him as the women could well yet end up with a few bob out of it and he won't work in security again as he is a liability...

Well in fairness "needing a permit to pray" is a classic and the rest of it about suing the council is laughable..His side of the story could well be comedy gold..

Was in Morocco last week and there was loads of churches in the city I visited (Tangiers) and a fair few synagogues as well. People didn't really care what religion you were tbh. A fairly liberal bunch. Some women wore a head scarf - a lot didnt. I was actually told that if you were in a bar and saw a women wearing the whole muslim top to bottom get up (sorry dont know the name - they actually might be prostitutes).

I actually did see Mother Theresas crowd walking around in their habits. People have very strange views of muslim nations which bear no relation to how they actually are or how they are portrayed. Only bad things make the news.

When I was in Bosnia most muslim girls were wearing mini skirts.

Every Islmaic nation is quite different to the the other. I mean Russia is a Christian country but if a Muslim visited Moscow and drew parallels with Galway it would be plain stupid. Its the same say with Tunisia and Saudia Arabia. Two totally different cultures. To say a muslim country means virtually nothing.

Morocco would probably be considered one of the most liberal muslim countries in the world - at the opposite end of the scale to the likes of Saudi Arabia. Home to some smokin' hot women as well (Morocco).

OT, I would definitely wait to hear the employees side of the story first, he might have a very different version of what was said.

I initially read this story on Yahoo! and here are some of the lovely comments left by the prejudiced and worryingly fascist-sounding folk who posted about it:

"We the Irish and English MUST unite to defend our ancestral homelands..period..Think about it AND PUT THE PAST ASIDE...
If you disagree with this comment you are (1) ill informed (2) your non white european"

"How dare these people bring their muslim religion to Ireland or the uk.I wonder what would happen Christians and other religions if we prayed openly in muslim countries.I blame the liberal left wing rats for whats happening to our countries."

"I bet these muslims and welfare leeches were also given irish passports ,i guess we have shatter and ahern to thank for what this country has become.Time to ban Islam in this catholic country"

"its only a matter of time before they will have their towers, with some idiot wailing every few hours to let them know its prayer time, can the people of Ireland not see how subtley this Islam business is sneaking very quickly and growing by the day, this is a travesty for Ireland,in 2 and half years Shatter and Kenny have destroyed this country with immigration, and this is whats happening now as a result of Shatter`s open immigration policies."

^ There's plenty more of 'em along those lines; "liberal left wing rats" is a particular favourite of mine. *facepalm*
