After 17 years driving I picked up my first ever ticket for parking in those parents and child spaces in a certain shopping center.

Naturally I won't be paying it. But I shall have some fun with it.

    WHAT?

I didn't think they did that in Ireland. What shopping centres give these out?

I don't believe there is anything illegal (or immoral, but that's for another thread) about parking in those spaces. Who issued the ticket, OP? Not a government body, presumably.

Where do fathers and child park?

huh? this can't be legally binding can it? i thought only guards and traffic wardens could issue parking tickets? besides OP if you have kids you're sorted!

They don't give tickets for parking in those spots, do they?

And how do they know you ain't got kids unless they watch every single car that parks in those spots?

True but the car park is most likely private property so there for you would not be legally obliged to pay the fine but they could ban you as I have seen this before.

Never heard of anyone getting a ticket for that. Don't see how it's enforcible really.

Tut tut by the way. Regardless of what you think about those spots, it's not your car park, it's theirs. If they want to reserve spots for people with children you should respect that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,009 ✭✭✭OldmanMondeo

OP stated parent and child and not Mother / Father and child...

Since it is Euro car-parks and not a state body, ie county council or Gardai who issued the ticket, OP can pay in Monlopy money if he wishes.

If you were parked like this idiot you deserved more than a ticket. :D:D:D

The guys who clamp cars on private property have been looking to have legislation made to allow them to ticket instead of clamping. Maybe it's a trial. :)

Post a copy of the ticket OP, i'd like to see it.

These spaces are not about the distance its about how big the spaces are so you don't hit someone elses car trying to get your child out, i would park in these spaces even if they were the furthest away from the entrance.

But idont have a problem with anyone parking in them i think the spaces should be all that big

come to galway and you will see two spaces taken up by one car ( i am sure its the same every where in carparks) that pisses me of big time when there are no more spaces left ,always bad on a friday.,,as a mother its hard enough to get buggie ,trollie in between the spaces that are for normal parking when a jack ass thinks my car is a magnet ( parked so close to me) so now i look for underground parking where there is a piller both sides so that no one could park next to me , ldle is brilliant for this..you will have to pay op if its a private carpark.

I think we might have a case of discrimination here as with the parking for particular folks :D

Children and women have legs just like single men parkers so they all should use them regardless of tiny distances.

Why didnt you park in a regular space and leave the parent child spaces for people who might need them?

To be fair its the first time I've heard of them issuing a ticket in Ireland.

Last I heard in the uk everyone was told to ignore them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,313 ✭✭✭Mycroft H

Well they've not got your name and address so carry on. Let them chase you.

OP you are not a nutcase, but you would be a nutcase if you paid for that junk, basically there was no other parking spaces so you had no choice but to park there, simple as that, tell them to take a hike.

If it was a disabled spot, then i can understand.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,354 ✭✭✭Sobanek

Wait, what if I'm driving and come with my father to the shop? Technically it is Parent and Child parking space :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,247 ✭✭✭✭Guy:Incognito

I thought this is what people wanted? No "evil" clampers , fines issued instead. But just as predicted its " I dont have legally have to pay them so they can **** off"

What is VRLI and what permit could have been shown? Is this not tantamount to deception?

That ticket is a laugh, open it up in photoshop and blank out the white boxes, refill them in with bogus info and stick them under the carparks security vans wiper. Do people really pay those things?

I wouldn't park in those spaces myself, but I would n me hole pay that ticket.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,620 ✭✭✭✭coylemj

Parking tickets issued by private companies have been the subject of consumer TV programs in the UK now for a while. An example I've seen more than once was where someone visited the same McDonalds twice in one day several hours apart, by chance they got logged on both occasions so the parking company slapped them with a ticket claiming that they had parked for too long and demanding payment of a fine. The ticket is usually designed to mimic a local authority parking ticket in the hope that a lot of people will just pay up to avoid a summons.

Advice is to throw it in the bin.

    Just binned it now.

You should at least ask what permit you need to display to park in a parent and child space.

I've been tempted to use them when I bring my Mother to the shops and it'd be handy if I could get a permit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,166 ✭✭✭enda1

I kinda get those spots but only for parents with babies which require buggies. But for parents with kids who are able to walk - no chance, silly stuff.

Did you have a child with you?

Would you park in a disabled space as quickly?

I've seen them used by people with teenagers as well!

I found them pretty handy when mine were still little so you've a little more room around the car and like you said, especially with buggies.

Having said that, there's no legal enforcement, entitlement or anything else of these things whatsoever. More of a courtesy thing. Unlike disabled spaces.

Either way, a private operator handing out fines is just chancing their arm.
