    Hi,

Myself and a few mates are thinking of setting up a soccer team to play in a low division in the Athlone area just for the craic mainly - (Ideally on Friday nights ;) )

Does anybody know where the best place to start is? Who to contact?

    Cheers in advance

The 2 leagues that service the Athlone area are the Combined Counties Football League (CCFL) and the Roscommon & District Football League (RDFL).
New teams start in the lowest Division. (4B for CCFL, cant remember the RDFL)

Having said that, there's already a plethora of teams in Athlone/surrounding area : Ballinahown, Clonbonny, Clonown, Gentex, Melville United, Melville Celtic, Monksland United, Moore United, St Peters, Willow Park....

Most games are Sunday morning/afternoon but if you have a floodlit pitch theres scope to moving to Friday evenings.

Theres a bit of effort in setting up, for example getting a rental agreement for a home pitch and getting all players registered and club insurance etc.

Theres no league specific for the Athlone area and to be honest 'the craic' can soon wear out when you are struggling to get a squad together to play in the @rsehoe of Offaly or Roscommon. :)

In the past few seasons, 2 cubs that were borne out of companies, originally for a bit of fun, (Ericsson & Heatmerchants) pulled the plug after dipping their toes into both Leagues
