    Folks,
Just thought I'd post this up here as I know a lot of us Linux Box users are fond of the PS3 PlayTV tuner.(I use 1 myself)

I was in Limerick City centre and CEX(2nd hand Tech and Entertainment shop) that recently opened up on Cruises St have a few of these units available for €32.
This is good value for a twin tuner USB tuner that runs via the DIB0700 driver on E2 images.
Its not quite a ''Bargain alert'' but these units are getting harder and harder to find so if anyone's looking, here's a headsup.

Irish DVB-T, and the second tuner will allow watch/record functionality if/when the 2nd DVB-T mux launches.
The device can be used in Linux since 2.6.30. It also can be used in Windows by patching the USB IDs in the driver of a card with the same dibcom hardware (such as the Pinnacle PCTV Dual DVB-T Diversity Stick). It can be used in both 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows using this method. There are believedto be two hardware variants of the device, using the ULI chipset.

In Linux or Windows, PlayTV can handle AVC/MPEG4 HD broadcasts which are used in Ireland and continental Europe. The UK has adopted DVB-T2 for terrestrial high-definition TV broadcasts, so the PlayTV will not give PS3 owners access to those TV channels.

An unofficial Windows application (in Spanish language only) allows users to edit the file channel_ps3.bin and customize the order of channels in the PlayTV software (a function not normally available). A PlayStation Jailbreak device is required in order to transfer the file from PS3 to PC.

I've "inherited" a PS3 meself, use it as a bluray player (a few discs with it too). Went from PS2 to 360 for games, mind.

banie01, I got a vu+ uno box on order and going to limerick tomorrow so might get that play tv gizmo but when installed how easy is it to change channels etc. Reading a review it looks as if this was built for PS3 and that remote.

Once the drivers are installed, the Vu box will treat it no different to any other tuner. The terrestrial channels will be fully intergrated with the sat channels, appearing on the one EPG grid and all controlled from the Vu remote.

Got One off adverts delivered this morning and after installing driver from ViX feeds it was up and running in two minutes. Runs perfect in my duo 2. Now have tuner D and E thanks to the play tv being a double tuner

As Apogee has said, once the drivers are installed it runs perfectly in the same manner as any other tuner.
Of course it was ''built'' for the PS3, but that has no bearing on its functionality in a Linux set up.
As for how easy it is to change channels?
You go to your DTT bouquet(Download one or create it via scan)
You push either the channel -/+ buttons on your remote or type in whatever number the DTT channel is assigned.
It works in exactly the same manner as the Sat tuners on your box once the drivers are installed and the box is of course rebooted.

ok got that play tv now, where do I get the drivers for the uno and where do I put them in the uno. I am using the openATV ver 3.0 image. I have it all working but it will take me a while to figure the whole thing out.

You are looking for 'dib0700' drivers - will download a few other packages as well when you select it to install.

Usually find it in the 'Plugins Download' menu - normally the plugins are grouped by type so look in the drivers section.

Have not had OpenATV image installed for a while, but nearly sure the same menus exist.

Once you install the drivers, then you normally have to do a power off/on (not just an enigma restart).
After your stb restarts your should see 2 extra tuners in the 'tuner Configuration' menu

i checked plugins and only got soundtek in there. is there another way I can get the drivers and will it work with openatv?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 621 ✭✭✭white_westie

99% sure it does - just a while since I had openatv on my box.
The dib0700 drivers are around a good while too.

if you are only seeing the Soundtek then they are in another menu.
Is there a menu called 'download extensions'?

If you are happy at the command line, then you could try and install them manually.
run 'opkg update' - this will update your sources, then you do a 'opkg list |grep dib0700'
I think you need to install the 'kernel-module-dvb-usb-dib0700' and it will pull down all the others.

Just looking at my vix image and nearly sure that's what I did.
OpenATV is part of OE-Alliance so should roughly be the same under the bonnet as such.

well you can be 110% because you were right. As the box is new to me I am pressing buttons at a rate of knots forgetting to wait.... so when I went back to plugins and waited all the bits I needed downloaded or I could see them all on the screen. Did exactly as you said and bingo its all working now. So I have dvb s2 tuner and a twin dtt= nice.

out of interest where can I fing the ccam file in the Vix image, is it under etc and scroll down

I am staying away from command line for a while.

    Thank you

    Happy days then.

Did you tune the 18 channels in okay?

cccam config file normally called /etc/CCcam.cfg

yes all perfect, and getting used to the box is the big step up.

Anyone using these on vix build 731 or higher? Seems to be a conflict with latest vu drivers?
