I'd be very nervous approaching that cattle grid at speeds like that

Rather him than me, and not happy that's safe with possible oncoming traffic or hikers who may be unaware he is approaching and get in his way.

That is an accident waiting to happen, the roads are in bits and way too many people hiking up the centre of the roads, they wouldn't be paying attention to anyone flying down on a bike at 90 km/h.

There were the two kids who had to jump out of his way half way down and he didn't seem to slow. Was traffic closed off for this?

    It's a private road.

Tuschel isn't a normal human being. His bike is also not normal.

He's been doing this sort of stuff a long time, and he's not dead yet.

Do not try this at home.

It did look fun though, would not like a flat front doing that.

    Did he wear a helmet?

NO, just no, don't comment on it, don't refer to it, just no. If you want to talk about helmets go to the helmet thread.

That descent is the most terrifying ride I've ever done, any let up on the brakes and it feels like the bike gets slung forward.

It may be a private road, but its a very popular walking route. I'm from close to there, and that video showed more people than I've ever met walking on it, so to be honest the thought that me or my family would meet a pr*ck going 90kph down that road makes me very angry.

Fair enough if you want to pick a quiet time and belt down it, but he deserves a slap for that.

Not cool. There's a duty of care to others that the dude seems to not care about.

I don't think he came close to 90kmph looking at it, but it was 2.6km in 2m24s so that is approximately 65km/hr from top to bottom.

I just watched his Ventoux descent, he was going so fast my phone crashed!

Jesus I wouldn't hit 90km/h in a car let alone a bicycle. Dangerous stuff.

Some hairy moments with walkers in the middle of the road, i'd be shi**ing myself...
Though i'd want hydraulic disc brakes on the bike for a descent like that...

That was hairy - overtaking motor vehicles at speed with little thought for what may be round the next corner - pretty reckless imo

I didn't think it was all that spectacular to be honest. I don't get the kerfuffle.

The walkers saw him coming in plenty of time. Private road so there were no cars.

He was only a danger to himself and judging by his line through a couple of corners he was on the "maximum".

Looks like a standard fast descent, he was in complete control, taking safe lines & had his brakes in use when needed... I think people are just extrapolating the reported max speed of 92kh and getting travesty & of course an opportunity to have a sanctimonious moan.
Stick a cam on the front of your bike, go down a railway bridge, let the wind make a racket into the mic, post it online & no doubt somebody will cry foul.

Which road is it around Mount Leinster? The one from the mast?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,013 ✭✭✭Ole Rodrigo

The lens on the camera makes the foreground seem to pass quicker and the background slower giving an over all impression of going at a higher speed. Cramcycle is right, his speed was in and around 65 kmph..if he hit 90 it wasn't for long.

I haven't done that descent but there seems to be sufficient visibility to cycle down it at speed. It's hard to estimate stopping distances watching the video but he seemed to see pedestrians well in advance and expecting the teenagers to move out of the way doesn't seem inconsiderate since it is a road after all. Looked fun!

Cool, well as people say, he was probably only doing around 65kph, sure i'd almost do that coming down into Howth harbour on the descent! :pac:

it's a closed off road with shag all motorised traffic though.
expecting someone to be considerate and move out of the way when you're doing 20km/h is one thing. expecting it when you're going four times the speed - especially when said pedestrians would not be expecting that at all - is another.

As a teen I used to cycle from home to the top of Mt Leinster (15 miles) just to do the same decent as on the video.

Max I ever got was 43 mph, but that was a bog standard mountain bike, no suspension, disk breaks etc... and that was 22 yrs ago. Wouldn't have the nerve to drive that fast now :(

Scariest part of this thread is finding people read Broadsheet.

There are also multiple threads with forum members claiming substantial speeds down other descents around Wicklow etc, so I'd hold on that "Will somebody think of the children" reaction. If there's anyone who could be trusted on descents like Mount Leinster, it's the man in that video.

I believe he said he hit 90km/h max speed. He averages at 65km/h.

If its a closed off road how is there a car parked on the inside of the gate... and some of them walkers had to jump out of the way and he had no intention of going for the brake.

The carpark's outside the gate on the far side of the road at the top of the Nine Stones.

I'd say he fairly scared the sh**e out of that couple on the cattle grid at 1.39!

@emtroche - you've just reminded me that the last time I went down that descent was in the Race Around Ireland and I think Janos was in the support car at the time. He's a stone cold badass in that capacity too. On the final stint I vividly remember descending Glenmalure towards Laragh at about 2am with him and the car's full beams literally inches from my rear wheel. Motivational.

Anyway, there's little defence to be made about that video other than he's probably better at descending at 90kph that the rest of us are at 60kph. Unless someone dives into his path he'll miss them.

I was in the car, but I don't think he was driving (possibly was but memory is hazy now). But yes, the inches from the rear wheel thing is an accurate description of when he was driving.

There has been a lot of construction going on there over the past few years when they were installing a new TV mast, there would be occasional traffic going up there for maintenance etc, but it is not open to public traffic.

The Race Around Ireland only passes by the end of that climb at the nine stones doesn't it, it doesn't go to the mast?

I just think he could have picked a better time to do it, it is a hell of an experience (for Carlow)

I've done this descent a few times, & I'm never tempted to 'let loose', or never for very long anyway.
There is an S bend to consider before 1.5km of a free-fall, and if the slightest thing goes wrong...........you're toast, so..............don't do it folks ;)

I seem to have missed the "92.6km/h" part..?

Just to clarify, that road only goes to the mast, it's a service road for RTÉ. It is gated at the bottom and cars cannot enter when it is closed, as it was in the video. It is so steep, I think I came down it at 10kph.
