    Hi,

I have a 2004 Toyota Avensis and when one the fuel runs down to about 1/4 of a tank it starts to splutter as if it is about to die due to lack of fuel.

Does anyone know why this might be?

Petrol or diesel? How many miles you getting to from a full tank til it starts acting up?

Are you sure the gauge isn't faulty and the tank is near empty?

If not then check the tank hasn't been damaged underneath and the pump/sender may have been shifted out of place. Other than that I'd start by changing the fuel filter although I can't see how it could be it.

When you fill up how many liters does she take (or rough cost)?

Daft as it sounds but before checking the fuel pickup / sensors etc., have a good look at the fuel tank itself. We had a similar problem and it turned out we had a dent in the bottom of the tank which meant when the tank got to 1/4 full we started to get problems. If we kept it over that level we had no problems. I assume the dent moved the fuel pipes / caused air locks etc.,

On the basis of those figures you seem to have about 4.5 litres left in the tank when it starts to splutter, that's a small amount of fuel in a big tank. Maybe you're just letting it run too low. Otherwise I'd check to see if it has a lift-pump in the tank in addition to the high pressure pump, the lift-pump might be weak.

EDIT: 4.5 litres is much too low for a 1/4 reading, I'd expect at least 15 litres for a 1/4 tank. Looks like Albioncat could be right.
