    I was offered a room on campus today, which I accepted but a fee of €1698.50 has to be paid by the 27th of August. Surely that can't be right! €1700 in 6 days notice!

    That would be the fee ok, the parents that pay this for their sons and daughters should be blessed. Not everyone is so lucky.

    Yep thats how they roll. Just wait till you read through the list of rule. Don't envy people in campus accomodation in the slightest.
