Cant believe how shocking this is. What kind of nation are we really? Our poorest and most vulnerable citizens jailed for not having the money to pay a tv licence, while the shirts and ties sit in the dail laughing and drinking and counting their money and making sure nothing is missed in their expenses. Or the bankers play golf not worried because they got their golden handshakes and ripped this country to pieces. Is this the nation we have become?

    Shame!

She wasn't jaiked for not paying for a TV licensce, it was for breaches of casual trading laws involving tobacco.

Did I miss something? I read the article quickly mind you, but didn't see anything about tv license. She didn't pay fees related to
casual breaches of casual trading laws involving tobacco.

I do feel sorry for her. But if it was some 21 year old lad who was involved in illegal trading with tobacco and refused to pay the fines would you care? Rules are rules I suppose.

She was breaking the law so she went to jail. I don't see the problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,371 ✭✭✭john_cappa

You didnt even read the article OP.

"Ms Teeling's fines date back several years and relate to breaches of casual trading laws involving tobacco"

    Piss off

"But Ms Teeling now faces a lengthy stint behind bars for non-payment of €4,000 worth of fines dating back years."

    What?

Where does it say she had no tv license?

And the TDs are on holidays.

Ms Teeling's fines date back several years and relate to breaches of casual trading laws involving tobacco.

Nothing about a TV license that I can see? Seems she's had several years to pay it as well.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    She wasn't paying her fines!!

Her sister passing away is just the sympathy card!! - obviously that's very sad but no excuse for not paying her fines!

But what about the kids? wont anyone think of the children??

"Her two grandkids are asking: 'Where's Granny?' I don't know what to tell them."

    lolled

    From the linked article:
Ms Teeling now faces a lengthy stint behind bars for non-payment of €4,000 worth of fines dating back years.

She racked4,000 in fines for selling hooky fags ffs!
    OP is highly misleading.

    a) I hate how every time there's a thread about someone being prosecuted this line is trotted out.

    b) what a steaming piece of turd that article is

I don't see much value in imprisoning someone for not paying there fines. It will surely cost us more than 4000 euro she owes, to jail her. Perhaps we should keep the space for the various violent and repeat offenders, who are regularly let our early, and some up with a more cost effective measure to punish those who don't pay fine e.g community service or something like that.

I see no reason to waste prison space like this.

I ate a pie and got fat. It's those bastards in the Dail's fault.

Its her own fault, pay the fines or go to prison. If she cant afford to pay the fines she stays in prison like anybody else why should age matter?.

I read she was jailed for having Black Jewish Non-national Gay Travellers Dealing Drugs out of her Dublin home.
    It's in the article somewhere.

There's a valuable lesson in this:

Read the article before you rush to be the first to express your outrage at the Government and bankers.

Id agree with the previous poster who said that we shouldn't be jailing fine dodgers. however she certainly deserves some punishment (i'm not sure what) for not paying the fines.

Age is not grounds for not punishing someone !!!

    fairly accurate thread title

if by 'elderly', you mean '64y/o'
and by 'no tv license' you mean 'flogging bogey smokes'

Change the thread topic, it's wrong and misleading.
