Student Commuting Tullamore-Dublin

Apologies if this kind of thread has been done to death!

I'm planning on commuting to college in Dublin from Tullamore everyday for the coming college year. I'll be getting the train as the station is only ten minutes from my house. I'm just wondering what kind of ticket would be the best value for me, considering I'll be travelling up and down 4-5 days a week. Also, do I need a Student Travelcard or will any student ID suffice?

    Thanks :)

College ID is fine, day return is around 19, weekly is around 79 I think and monthly is around 210-220,
I done it all last year

Pricey! I guess the monthly ticket is the best value for money though. Thanks so much!

A lot cheaper than renting in Dublin though!

Oh absolutely, hence the decision to commute in the first place :)

Would you not get a room to rent for not a lot more?

Only certain college IDs are only OK for singles and returns. For weekly or monthly tickets, you need a Student Travel Card.

Note that you can get combined train/tram/bus tickets from Irish Rail.

I have very few hours in college this year so it makes more sense to live at home rather than spend 500+ per month just living in Dublin.

Weekly student season ticket is €69 from Tullamore to Dublin and monthly ticket is €220.

Fair enough but I see rooms to rent seem for 250 pm.

That's not too bad actually, but when you add on bills, transport and food shopping it still works out very expensive. The joys of it :pac:

I may get my travelcard organised and enquire about the monthly ticket in the train station :)

I've been using a UCD college ID all last year for monthly's and I never had a bother

If you are travelling to/from Dublin with a season ticket you should have a student travelcard.

The exemption only applies to single/return tickets.

Dang I see it now, did they just change it for the coming student year

Yeah it's a pain, I can't actually get a travelcard until I get back to college either so I might have to buy a single ticket the very first day, get thr card in college and then buy the monthly one...

for the first few weeks of college a letter of registration will cover you for the monthly, but check at the station to be sure

Yeah they do, the train station is far closer to my house though so I'm happy to stick with that. I have used Kearns quite a bit though, it's a good service.
