CPU Upgrade From E8500

After 5 years of stressing the fcuk out of the E8500, it finally went. Managed to get it 5ghz - 24hr stable after a huge level of persistence, so I wasn't really surprised it went so soon, with the temps so high and everything. Great chip.

Anyway, what do you lads think would be a good upgrade for the LGA775 socket, taking the price/performance ratio into consideration?

I was thinking on maybe getting a cheap Q6600 somewhere on adverts or something, it's an amazing overclocker apparently. So should I try and get one of those, or get a faster processor than that and then overclock it?

    No budget really. Cheers.

Bought a Q6600 a few months back to replace an overclocked E4400. Well worth it if you are willing to overclock. Brought mine up to a modest 3Ghz, but with the extra cache I really see an improvement in my FPS. I don't have any games that require more processing power to be honest. Temps with a five year old Arctic Freezer and silver paste are about 40 to 45 degrees on idle. Under 70 at benchmarking load.

Second hand q6600 slacr would be your best bet for about €40-50.

    Cheers both.

Yeah, think I might go for a second hand Q6600 SLACR then. How far could I realistically overclock it to? It would be great if I could manage 4ghz from 2.4ghz.

When I was buying my second hand Q6600 slacr I found Ebay to be cheaper than Adverts, but check em all out. Came to £37 pounds including delivery (£1).

It runs hot of you don't have a beast of a cooler and good airflow. Wouldn't risk more than 3.2Ghz myself. But I'm a wuss :)

    Cheers man.

I've a brilliant cooler that my brother got me a few years ago, along with the room being unbelievably cold, so it shouldn't be a problem I suppose.

QX9650 is a better CPU if you can get your hands on it. I've got mine at 3.67Ghz on Zalman CNPS 9900NT with just a multiplier, absolute beast for such an old CPU, beats my GF's Q6600 by far on stock alone. I bet it would perform better trough bus OC, but the mobo I had was a refurbished peace of crap p7n2 diamond.
Looking around at prices, they are still seriously overpriced, altho that price is fair in terms of performance return for an old chip. If you can find one under 100, don't hesitate much.

Even qx6800 should be a better option, but I never had a chance to play around much with it or do benchmarks.

You would be better off upgrading to an fx 6300 for that kind of money.

    Yup, no arguing there.
