    Hi Folks,

Just got my first maths post for a year after subbing for two years. I am trying to devise a subject plan for the year but I am just wondering which maths topics are taught in 5th year and which are taught in 6th year? Or is this something I will find out week when I attend the 'all day' staff meeting before the students are back?

    Thanks!

Teachers generally work out a subject department plan together, so there is probably one in place in your school for you to follow

You can also go to the Project Maths website and look for Teachers Handbooks, they have the suggested teaching order and length to spend on each topic. It's not the intended bible but if it's your first class from September it can be worth having a read :)

You might find the start of year meeting will move pretty quick and teachers may take it as a given that everyone is ready to go. So possibly arrange a follow up meeting after it.

maybe email the dept. head now and ask for last years scheme of work...it 'should' be in a folder in the staff room or reception if you want to offer to get a hard copy yourself.(get permission from DH first maybe!)

Also ask last years 5th/6th year teachers about what to expect, I suppose each year has it's own peculiarities. If you want to go all out on the hassling people front, contact year head and ask if there are any students (parents!) you need to keep an eye out for.

get summer results for last year sixth years!.

I suppose its 'what you are going to teach when' is your main concern but I suppose the 'who' will be just as important in the long run!

Thank you so much for the advice! Really appreciate it :). With no previous experience, I was unsure as to what preparations to have been making. But will definitely follow your advice, thank you :)

Does anyone use the Teachers Handbook and follow that scheme? I ind that there's too much jumping between topics. I know that that would be the PM team's preferred way of doing things though. Personally I prefer to immerse in a topic and at the end maybe try to make the connections between other subjects.

I don't follow it, but I know as a NQT who hasn't planned for a year before it's nice to have them laid out like that. Our school does follow the CIC as laid out though.
