Went a bit silly and bought a RR 2.5 Worse case scenario , how much would a new AT box cost? Had to get a few bits sorted for it and have new key ordered from dealers but getting AT overheat message so thinking the worst :(

    Thanks

Gearbox ? auto gearbox I think your asking about? Change the oil first (gearbox oil) might be the cheapest fix ever.
If not your looking at a big bill even doing the work yourself.

Getting your own reconditioned should cost around €1000 -€1250 and at least then you know what you have.

Check the transmission level and quality of the fluid. Im not sure about RR but many automatic
Transmissions use AFT fluid. Best to confirm the type before topping up.

2nd hand may be a cheaper option but no way of knowing how good or bad it is until its fitted.

    How is it driving ?

Got it on Monday, warning notice came on Tuesday but has a fan belt change was getting done while my OH was picking it up on Monday and mechanic said he did not have the diagnostics stuff to clear warning message . Was over at motor factors anyway to order new key fob and they said they would look at it for me anyhow when the key thing was being coded, Was driving great till today when it started beeping at me.

Getting new key on Tuesday coming, hopefully as up till now have stuck 2 x 20c coins onto fob and have been using a pen to click the alarm off LOL

Hope it is ok, I like the older 4 x 4 s for some reason, sadly had to sell my Toyota VX about 18 months ago due to financial reason and have gone through a Jeep Cheroke ( not a good buy ) and lost my 97 Disco to the OH have kind of took it over.

Ive no experience of the RR as I have a jeep grand cherokee and this advice is basied on the jeep so might not directly translate for RR

Transmission over temp normally only shows up when under load very steep hills towing a trailer etc... if its comming on as soon as you start up then its likely a sensor.
If it comes on after driving normal after a few miles or less it is likely fluid level low, blocked filter, bad pump or transmisdion cooler lines blocked if fitted.
Auto transmissions with age do fail and most mechanics shy away from them as its a lot of work to do a proper diagnosis but if it turns out to be a sensor it will be money well spent.

There is lots of fourms for range rovers be worth looking and asking for advice there.

It is hard to go back to a regular car once your use to driving jeeps.... I nearly bought one myself but its air suspension failed on test drive and the others in my price range had issues.

Im sure you miss your toyota must have been a sad day when it went.

The big issue I find is most don't maintain their jeep. Oil change and everything else is ignored until it breaks. I guess the previous owner just forgot to tell you about transmission fault..

I also thing the older RR looks better or at least it looks more off road capable. Hope you get it sorted.

P38s are developing a bit of a following now, those still on the road usually have their electrical gremlins sorted by now. If you're going to keep it I'd look in to getting your own diagnostic kit.

change the oil and filter in the 'box sump pan, drive a round for 3-400 miles then change it again, there is a specific way of filling the box correctly as it won't have a dipstick. the colour coming out should be cherry red, if its black or brown then the clutch packs are worn out.

to fill the box fill the sump thru the drain plug till it dribbles out, start vehicle and with foot on the brake cycle thru all the gears, hold it in each gear for 10 secs then return to neutral. chock the wheels then with engine running check the level thru the drain plug and top up the fluid till it dribbles out. repeat once more and you're done!

One thing to check also would be the condition of the transmission oil cooler. From memory, there was something about fog lights blocking the air flow to the cooler, I could be wrong. . . . .
