Just ordered it at a cool 35e a month. Last year you got the espn channels along with it but don't anymore. Also BT have taken away the french games and some of the top prem games. It's a bit of a joke really. If I rang up cancelled it in next month or so might I get a deal?

Have you not agreed to a contract period?
It is too expensive seeing as they don't now have all the games.
I only pay for the f1 channel and got it on a deal at €60 for the year.

I rang on on Friday to see how much it was and the girl told me if I could get it then for 35 a month or I could wait until Tuesday and there would be a special offer of 17.50 for 6 months..... I'm waiting till Tuesday :-))

Well I have to give them 31 days notice is all I think. I've had sky for ages. Just cancelled the sports for the summer.

Oh ya. Its just the notice period so.
Ring them and cancel the whole thing in a month or so and see what they offer.

Yeah will do. Theyre putting up a euro too on september 1st just reading. No shame ffs.

Is there a minimum period I need to keep the sports after ordering?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,929 ✭✭✭dubmick

If people were giving me money without thinking I'd have no shame either.

    To get full sports:

    €35 (Sky), €20 (BT/Setanta) = €55
And for the privilage of HD = €15
    ________________________________
    €70?!?!?

Charging you €15 to get what you already paid for in HD is the final kick in the b*lls!

Enough!! Time to go down the internet route ....

is sky sports only 35 euro a month?
I though it was 35 on TOP of the basic sky of 27euro/ month - meaning to get sky sports you need to shell out 62 a month.

If it was only 35euro (and no need to get entertainment channels for 27Euro that you can live without) I'd say it's actually fairly good value for money.
Its unbelievable the range of sport that they show so if youre into both rugby and soccer and F1 (and cricket!) you do get your moneys worth.

They have just started handing over a few extra billion to the Premier League for the new contract, so they have to recoup it somehow.

Its only going to get more expensive.

It's the "in order to have this, you must first get this" payment model thats puts so many people off I think.

True. They'd get more subscribers I think if they made their packages individually available. Strangely enough they actually do this with their online Now TV option in the UK where Sky Movies is offered for £15 per month. A sports equivalent would do well I'd say.

yup, but i think theres a little cross subsidisation going on there within sky to cover the gigantic sports rights packages so they probably have to charge for the basic package to have a chance of breaking even!

That said, there was the ability to get sky sports on freeview but it was also shocking dear and you didnt even have all the channels so fairly unattractive.

Sky have been operating that model from the start.

Back when the Enteetainment Package + Sports was maybe 34.99, you could get the Movies added for a total of 39.99, so most people thought "sure for the extra 5.00 I may as well get the movies", and maybe watched one every few months.

EVERYBODY DO NOT SUBSRCRIBE TO ANY SPORTS CHANNELS!
That will stop any broadcasters any extra money for rights and charging more.

Don't know, probably never. A campaign should be organised to get people to unsubscribe. Maybe next May should be a good time to launch such a campaign as the football and rugby seasons come to an end.

Break even? Didnt BskyB just announce record making profits?

I think £1.3Billion was the operating profit as of June. So they have just broken even yes.

Just had a look and they do have a PAYG Sports offering and a 24-hour pass to all the Sports channels... for a tenner!

Personally I pay less than that a month and I don't miss a thing :p

nope, I stand by what im saying.

They have 10,422,000 customers paying say 27euro a month for the basic package for 12 months of a year.
Thats 3376728000 or 3.3Billion Euro a year income for the basic package.
For repackaged free to air tv plus a couple of extra channels its some income!

Its hard to say how many sports customers there are, let alone how many would jettison the basic package (or not have subscribed for it in the first place) if it wasnt compulsorary - but that profit of 1.3 billion(say 1.6billion Euro) would be a fair bit closer to barely breaking even if even a fraction of the 3.3 billlion income for the standard package wasnt there.

ah but you see 90% of people never cancel and sky know that so they can live with their 10% churn rate and put up the prices each year knowing that new subscribers will pay full price and offering some others half price will keep em hooked.

I moved down the streaming route a few years ago. Using Sky Go and some high quality streams online. I've never watched as much football.

Ok Im not getting live pause or recording functionality but at least its free and of excellent quality.

Phoned them today and they're offering half price for 6 months. You have to sign up to a 12 month contract though.

There could have been, but BT sold off the consumer BB end to Vodafone :(

    I'm happy enough to pay.
    I don't begrudge sky making a profit.
They expect you to ring and bargain with them these days, like the poster above I haven't paid the advertised price in years, if ever!

It'll be interesting to see what Eircom unveil as part of their TV/broadband package later this year.
