hi, my Passat 130bhp tdi recently has had problems starting from cold, have replaced both coolant temp sensors but doesn't seem to help, I noticed the car is only raising to about 70 celcius coolant tempature on the gauge, could this possibly be the thermostat?

What temperature did the needle previously go to? A faulty thermostat shouldn't affect the car's ability to start in hot or cold weather.

it usually sits at 90 when it comes fully up to tempature but now it sits at 70

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Thermostat is possibly stuck open, but as coylemj said, that wouldn't make any difference on starting the engine from cold

Any competent mechanic should be able to sort you out. The thermostat will typically be set so that the engine runs at an optimum temperature, if it's running at a lower temperature then you're probably using more fuel and there will be slightly more wear on the engine.

It's supposed to open and close so that the coolant around the engine is maintained at the optimum temperature. If it stays open then the coolant is permanently circulating through the radiator where it gets cooled and the engine will run at a lower temperature, if it stays closed then the coolant will rapidly heat up and your needle will go to the right very fast.
