New insurance policy a week after accident

A car rear ended me quite badly last week and now my car is wrote off. The case is pending with my insurance company at the moment. Because the driver fled the scene, I have had to claim off my own insurance and they will then follow it up as it wasnt my fault. I have been given a car by a family member for the time being but i'm wondering will there be any problems getting a new insurance policy so soon after this claim? I really need a vehicle for work. So getting insurance is urgent. Thanks in advance

If you have a claim active then as far as I am aware your insurance goes up full wack until it is sorted, that's what happened to me a few years ago as you are classes as loosing your no claims ??

Yea they told me I would lose my no claims for the time being anyway (raging as I had 5 years), but that cant be helped as I need some form of insurance to get me to and from work. Will getting insurance full stop be a problem regardless of the lack of no claims?

Taking out a new policy with an open claim may prove difficult. Try your current insurer first, and dont be surprised if most of the others dont want to quote you.

Is it just coincidence that your old policy has expired now?
Your current insurance company will probably be the only company willing to quote you. I'd definitely be taking out a payment plan rather than paying a huge amount now and hope the claim is sorted out soon.

Yea I got all the details but it's going to take a while to sort out. Guards still havnt found him or know whether the insurance on said car is valid or relating to driver in question. Whole thing was caught on cctv which will help me...its hateful that these people can do this and law abiding people have to pick up the pieces :(

Can't you transfer your existing policy to your loan car until it's resolved?

I was told (probably incorrectly!) that once a car has been written off, the insurance policy is terminated and a new one will have to be obtained. Something to do with the official contract ending and by honouring the claim, the insurance company have fulfilled their obligations to this contract. Please correct me if i'm wrong!

Your insurance company would be the ones to ask for advice on this. Anyone else is just giving second hand information. Could luck with it all, hope you get it sorted soon.

Best just to start ringing around, check online quotes. Perhaps a broker.
