Same cars, just tend to be better minded in most cases. Also people don't go for paddy-spec due to tax cost

They have a system in place to record damaged and wrote off vehicles unlike this country and are usually better spec.

A lot of the time UK cars would have a higher spec than the same model of car that you would get in Ireland. Also a high mileage car would often be mainly motorway driving. One thing to check out would be the underside of the car as the UK roads are liberally salted during bad winter weather.

Uk cars are usually better cared for than Irish cars and most I see have better body work and paint work as well.

Where uk cars don't fair so well is with rust. This shouldn't be too much of an issue with a newer car but on anything a little older it can be. Rust usually affects cars from northern parts of England and Scotland far more than it does on cars from southern England.

It very much depends on what cars you're looking at, for example Volvo UK distributes base spec cars, but Volvo Ireland doesn't. Any Volvo (pre 2011 anyway) on the market here with cloth seats (apart from C30) are UK imports.

You may be better of in terms of residuals to buy a higher spec Irish car, than a well equipped base spec UK model: Things like MPH speedos on post 04 cars and the effects of salting of the UK road network on cars imported at 3 years or older are factors that would definitely give me a boot to stick in someone if I was looking at a car. In fact I'd be pissed off with someone for wasting my time by not telling me a car is an import.

There are plenty of high spec Irish cars out there these days, you just need to put the same effort into finding one as you would finding the right car to import.

I never understand why people give this as a reason not to buy UK cars.

    1) I've yet to see a car with MPH clocks that aren't also in km/h (or has the option to change if digital)

    2) It's not that hard to convert between the two

If you're looking for something that's a bit rare the UK has a much larger pool of vehicles to choose from too. Their annual new car market is around 2 million vehicles, compared to a peak here of about 250 000 during the boom (it's below 100 000 these days) so something that's perhaps only 1 % of the market will turn up more often over there and you'll have a bigger choice meaning more opportunities to push for a good deal.

Higher spec cars normally than here, who the customs will just loooove screwing you for in extra vrt also alot of motors being clocked so be very aware of the problem when parting your hard earned yo yo's
