I just got Superquinn's promotional flyer in the door and shoved between the pages of beautiful food is a page long cut out for Supervalu range of generic groceries.
So I've decided to start an online petition to halt this take over - hands of our Superquinn!! - we like it just the way it is!!!
I will refuse to shop there if this changeover comes to pass - will u?

There's only 6 SQ outside the pale, none near me.
I'll just keep shopping where I usually go.

So, you don't want Superquinn taken over by Super Valu.

Would you prefer that it closes completely, and everyone working there lose their jobs?

They can't magically make the money appear to save it without the takeover, so it's going to happen, petition or not.

Superquinn Blackrock is a dreadful store, the sooner they turn it into a Supervalu the better, I might shop there then

If SuperValu had any cop on they'd have a Superquinn section inside every Supervalu store, best of both world for customers and they could leverage the brand equity of Superquinn for themselves with a view to rekindling it on a larger scale if the country ever returns to prosperity.

    Supervalue already OWN superquinn.

This is just a rebrand, not a take over.

    Theyve owned them since 2011!!!

Supervalu's an awful mediocre operation imo but the way some folks go on, you'd swear SQ was Fortnum & Mason.

I love the Superquinn in Waterford for their fresh bread and fruit and veg, hope it doesn't change too much.:(

Why? So that they can go bust altogether? If we really liked it just the way it is then there would have been enough customers to keep the company going but in my own opinion, Superquinn were ridiculously overpriced compared to other supermarket chains. Comparing Superquinn's 'beautiful food' to Supervalu's 'generic groceries' is downright snobby.

What I cant understand is why ppl like their sausages so much, their very average. Clonakilty or Rosscarberry are so much better.

It won't,the head of Supervalu said they are keeping certain produce (such as the sausages) and are planning to stock them in other Supervalu stores, all a panic over nothing really.

I think years ago they were much nicer and for some strange reason people still think they taste the same

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I've used Superquinn for years, switched earlier in the year to Dunnes to see if I could save a bit, couldn't see any difference in price really, back to Superquinn, went to a big enough Supervalu last week, there own brand stuff is inferior & wasn't impressed with their meat products so I hope their influence on Superquinn is minimal

Why cant they just keep the superquinn name and let it operate as a subsidiary company to supervalue?

Because they want to break into the Dublin market, build up the brand name there and not be seen as a regional brand.

Supervalu in Waterford is horrible, Manky shop and overpriced compaired to the likes of tesco and that. Did my shopping there once because the other half got vouchers at Christmas time in work, couldn't get half the stuff I needed and cost a fortune!

My first job was working part time in superquinn when it opened first, it was a great shop, great crack working there, sad to see so many changes in the place !

My guess is that they will be calling them SQ sausages, but in reality they'll be SV.

The reason for this rebranding is to lower the standard of certain SQ goods. Makes them cheaper to produce. You can already see their salad bowls going downhill.

SV is crap and we'll probably transfer our custom to Lidl, Dunnes and Tesco. I'll bet others will too. The local SQ (Lucan) has been steadily going downhill since Musgraves bought it.

"Crowning the customer" becomes "Crowning the profits and fcuk the customer"

Two words OP, Superquinn Thrift. SQ have nothing to be proud about when it comes to generic produce.

I've done a load of work for sq - the food etc all comes from a warehouse much the same as every other warehouse, into a store with much the same shelves etc as every other supermarket and out through cash registers, much the same as every other store... someone remind me what the fuss was about again? Does a Brennans pan taste nicer if you buy it in a different store?

I never realy got the whole "I like such and such better" - I usually like the one that's nearest and has the crap I need. Is it a female thing to "prefer" shoping in one or the other? As for the whole "price" thing, I've a massive blind spot on that one - tends to be somwhere on the list of "things I pay attention to" four or five below "Twinks new production of"... I thought that was what God put down whingey people on earth for, to make sure the rest of us get good value when we're out shopping. Very useful they are too.

Superquinn bread tastes much nicer because it's freshly baked in store and not generic crap

Lucky for me so that I like Brennans. :D Generic crap ftw. Also, are you 100% sure about that? I always have visions of acres of Wheat growing in the car-park and a windmill churning out flour next to the wheelie bins. As opposed to a daily delivery of par-baked dough balls...generic ones.. or do sq make their own dough?

Their bigger stores make their own dough - everything is done on the premises for breads and cakes

It's not "our" Superquinn - it's Musgrave's. And they can do whatever they like with it. It's a shame to see the demise of a brand that people actually care about, but if it hadn't been taken over by Musgrave, it's quite likely that it would have disappeared two years ago. Also, my local Superquinn was pretty crap under the previous owners (who were just a bunch of property speculators, and didn't seem to give a damn about customer service). It seems to have improved a lot over the last couple of years.

Incidentally, while I like their bread and sausages, I'll be really pissed off if the microwaveable sticky toffee pudding that you get with their "€8 Meal Deal" disappears.

Parking aside the comedy part of the post believe it or not the little select stores were making money when the larger ones weren't.

Like Superquinn but my God it takes an awful length to go through the checkouts.

I've often been in Superquinn when there's been a queue of 4 or 5 people at the open tills. Then each till would have a member of staff packing bags for customers while there were 3 or 4 other tills with nobody on them. Could never understand why they wouldn't put the bag packers on the empty tills and get the customers through quicker.

Employing bag packers and baking their own bread?no wonder they went bust.

Now is it just me or has anyone else noticed the overuse of the phrase 'Crazy Prices' in Tesco ads lately?

    What gives with that?

Are they trying to tap into the Dublin nostalgia shopping market or what?

It's the chatting by the checkout operators, far worse in Superquinn than anywhere else.
