    Strange one-

    System is an i7 950 on x58-ud5.

When booting in Windows 8, card doesn't show up in device manager and drivers can't install, although adapter information shows the GK110 board.

When booting in 8.1, card works perfectly, no issues...

Done a clean install on both, still can't sort it.

    Chipset drivers installed?

Have you tried installing the gpu drivers in safe mode?

yes all drivers installed and up to date. Safe mode made no difference, as the card, although working fine and running the display I am using, is not 'seen' and therefore the vram cannot be used.

    Thats very odd.
Can you try it in another pcie slot and if that doesn't help a different pc?

Did that, works in both x16 slots in 8.1, neither slot in 8...
