Not much there when you cut to the chase. Very innovative idea to go after the Dublin/Cork business market though - I'd never have thought of that one. He's one from the Oliver 'all our trains will have comfortable seats' Doyle school of management.

A little to early to judge him but from what he has done and spoken about he isn't useless like the previous one who did SFA, besides take home has big fat annual wage per year.

I think that is somewhat unfair.

Dick Fearn did introduce a completely new fleet of trains, increased frequency on all routes (including the hourly Dublin/Cork product), introduced clockface schedules across the network, reintroduced the basic 15 minute DART service, and introduced cheaper online fares.

While I'd criticise him in other respects (such as ignoring freight and not focussing enough on infrastructural improvements -v- motorways), I think he did make a significant contribution in moving the railway on from being a dinosaur.

When you sum it up like that maybe I was a little harsh but I just think that this one is and will continue to do a better job. He is showing more commitment to the job and more hands on approach which is what's needed.

wasn't most of the freight gone by the time Dick came on the scene, with the exception of shale maybe and that speaks more to the collapse in cement capacity in Ireland in some ways. Dick just said he wasn't interested in bulk and he wasn't interested in selling the service, but if someone wanted to hire his trains on a trainload basis a deal could be done. That freight in its shrunken state has broken even financially since is as best as can be hoped for while Government won't subvent it.
