A friend of mine is planning on building a new chimney on his cottage after years of patching up cracks that have always leaked and this winter gone his ceiling collapsed, so its now time to fix it properly. I know a fair bit about building as ive worked in construction for few years and have been chatting to him about said chimney.

You see he's capable of building it himself as he's worked in construction but hes been telling me that he'll be be nailing his 6inch lead flashing onto the chimney with a stop bead nailed about 2 inch, dressed over 12inch laid onto tiles/tucked under the 6 inch lead. Ive worked in many things in the building game but i always thought that lead was suppose to be built into the block with lead trays etc..

IMO what he's going to do will just give him the same damp problems he's getting now because the chimney will soak up all the rain and end up running down behind the lead and into the house.

Another thing he told me about the chimney cap is that he'll be laying 6inch DPC under this, but none on top of the fill where he's filled the inside of the chimney. IMO again, will the chimney cap not soak up the rain and draw the damp down in the inside of the chimney where the fill is and give him more damp problems. I thought there was a massive lead tray that was suppose to go under the cap that will stop this downward damp.

I was going to take give him a hand with this job but dont want nothing to do with it because i think its a waste of time because he'l have to rip it down again and build it propery
