What needles and thread for embroidery and hand applique?

I am starting a new project (a very beginner one!!) and want to do both embroidery and applique by hand. I know I need embroidery thread/floss for the embroidery - can I use this for the hand applique also or do I need to use normal thread? And what needles do I need? Thanks!

If you are starting out I'd use tapestry needles and a lose weave natural fabric.

Use just 3 or less of the 6 stands in the floss.
