Car hire in Ireland without credit card

Hey, I'm coming home for a week at the end of the month and looking to rent a car. The problem is I don't have a credit card so I'm wondering if anyone knows of a car hire company that doesn't require one. I will be renting the car from Shannon on Monday the 26th and returning it to Kerry on Sunday the 1st of September. Also I'm not sure if I would have enough on my debit card to cover the excess so will probably have to take out the extra insurance.
    Thanks,
    Boomerangtank

I am afraid you should make different plans. I tried to do the same in the past with no success whatsoever - the few companies that would agree to a rental on a debit card, wanted a silly amount of "security deposit" (in the range of 2000 euro). Maybe someone know a minor company that will have better conditions, but in the meantime be prepared to find different means of transportation.

I really dont know, best thing to do is ring them and ask.

You could however get a pay-as-you-go Credit card that gives you a physical card. AFAIK it registers at the POS (point of sale) as a credit card and not a debit card.

    Exactly.
I have something like that, and I always used it for car rentals without any problems or questions. Card looks and works exactly like credit card, but limit on it is only up to amount of money you have on it.

They'll probably want to pre-authorise a substantial sum if the OP doesn't take their CDW, though.

I've used a debit card three times to hire a car in the past three years.

True. They preauthorise deposit, so that amount will be blocked from the card, so OP would have to make sure he has it there to spare for those days of rental. It will be back after rental is finished.

So it's just to shop around for rental companies that charge the smallest deposit.
The smallest I paid was bout 120 euros but that's with rental company in Poland.
The biggest I paid was over 1500 for prius with Dollar/Thrifty.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll be looking to rent the cheapest car possible so probably a 1 liter fiesta or similar so if anyone knows which companies charge the least deposit that would be really helpful.
I rented a car last march but didn't have enough money on my card so I had to take out the extra insurance which I would like to avoid if possible this time.
    Thanks,

I used entreprise each time for my rentals, they took an extra €300 and then refunded it when the car went back
