Social Care Work Placement

I'm currently studying for the BA in Applied Social Studies in Social Care & I have recently agreed in principal to do my third year work placement in a Youtreach centre. I'm just wondering is this an appropiate workplace for a potential Social Care worker. I don't see why it wouldn't be but I'd like some other opinions because I want to if the case is cancel it & organize another placement.

I have contacted my course leader but have yet to receive a reply & its been over a month

I don’t see why it’s not a good work placement. The Yourthreach programme targets young individuals that have left mainstream education without any qualification, and aims to provide them with a second chance in order to increase their odds of securing future employment. Based on various socioeconomic factors, disadvantage and/or inequality, many of the participants in Youthreach will likely have current or previous experience of conflict, oppression, poverty and/or social alienation (to name but a few); topics which any social care practitioner ought to familiarise themselves with in depth. And because of the age group involved (15-21), you’ll certainly have your hands full, no doubt. Best of luck with it.

I am a Social Care Worker and doubt Youthreach would employ someone with a Social Care degree without experience or qualifications in education delivery. The centre would certainly give you valuable experience in regards to the client group, but personally, I think you should seek work experience in a place that will employ Social Care Workers.
What do you hope to do when you finish?

Thank you guys. My hands will be full I say because after what I've heard about the youthreach programes & during my interview I was told that 'the lads mightn't like you because of what you represent'but its nothing I can't handle :)

I'm planning to go to the MSW in UCC & hopefully go into youthwork

My son had a placement in Youthreach when he was taking his Social Care degree, it really seemed to stand to him. He went straight from college into working fulltime (for an agency) in a High Support Unit, he also worked in a Special Care Unit for quite a long time.

He liked it in Youthreach, it was mostly supervision and one on one help, it could be very stressful but he knew the kids were trying to get under his skin and never took it personally.

    Best of luck
