Treatment system - checking sludge depth

WARNING - what is suggested here is dangerous - you should take extreme care when opening a treatment system

I wanted to find out when I would need to pump out my treatment system (5 chamber system with air pump). The initial settlement tank fills with the "solids" from the house and needs to be cleared once in a while (suggestions seem to be between 1 and 3 years at a cost of €200 plus each time)

To check the depth of solids I was advised to
    • take a long pole
    • dip the settlement tank to gauge depth from surface to bottom
    • wrap a white cloth around the end of the pole to the depth discovered above
    • re-dip the tank - the sediment/sludge level should be demarked with a line on the cloth
I hope to attempt the above soon and will post pictures

Again - these tanks are dangerous - don't fall in, or allow any one else to fall in - think how a health and safety guru might approach such a task and be even more careful than they would be.
