Have a pes moderator on a tikka T3 which is a nice lite rifle, problem is mod is very heavy and at about 13 inches long, it makes rifle top heavy and adding bipod it makes off shoulder shot near impossible. don,t know much about mods as its first one i,ve used ever but what it lacks with re to weight it makes up with quietness, im told its a very good mod. my question is is there any other mods that would be as good but lighter or are they all as heavy.

I've used Ase, Wildcat, T8, etc. on a multitude of rifles. Each had their own benefits over the other be it price, effectiveness, weight, etc.

When choosing a new one for the new rifle i had read reviews, and been told about the A-Tec. So i took a look at one. It breaks down into easily cleaning pieces, is lightweight, can be improved with more baffles, and is reflex (comes down over barrel).

Never fired one, but so far it's looking promising. So if weight and length is an issue then i'd suggest starting there.

The Ase are a great mod, but expensive and dear. The wildcat are reasonably priced and effective. The T8 is quiet, and not too heavy, but a little tinny, and prone to corrosion (more so than others).

Here is a review i done on them a while ago.

Here are a few mods and average prices. They do depend on where you buy them obviously.

    Ase Utra S5/Jet-Z = €380

    T8 = €265

    Wildcat Predator = €295

Personally i have/had all three of the above and find the Wildcat the better of them overall. I've given some observations based on usage and the rifles they were used on below.

    An Ase Utra S5 on a .308
    • Great mod, great results with little to no difference in POI out to 300yds with it on or off.
    • Easy enough to clean.
    • Best sound reduction.
    • Heavy on the end of the barrel.
    • More expensive than most other mods.
    • Tough wearing and will last as long as the owner if treated right.
    T8 on 30-06 and .243
    • Good on the .243 and 30-06, but difference in POI with mod on was 7" at 200yds.
    • Prone to rusting.
    • No more difficult to clean than an Ase, etc.
    • Screws down over barrel so reducing excess weight on the end of the rifle.
    • Has a resonance when fired.
    • Cheapest of the current available stock of mods.
    • Lighter than the Ase.
    Wildcat on .223
    • Great mod, and very little in difference in POI with in on or off.
    • Lighter than the Ase and ( i think) the T8.
    • Screw down over the barrel for reduced weight.
    • Completely comes apart for easy cleaning.
    • Baffles can be changed allowig the mod to be used on a .223 up to .30cal wth new inners.
    • Polymer housing gives no resonance.
    • Cheaper than Ase, but a little more expensive than T8.

i replaced the wildcat 8 on my t3 lite a couple of weeks ago becuse of the same issue . I went for a atec maxim with 6 baffles.
Its thinner ,shorter and alot lighter than the wildcat and very similar sound performance.Note the standard maxim has only 4 baffles and from testing adding the extra two is worth it.Its is fantastically made and strips easy for cleaning if you feel like it

also it is a hybrid silencer so all the parts that come in contact with hot gases are made in steel and everything else is made in aluminium so it should last as well

What price was the atec mod.

I was reading up on the t8 and it claimed to bring the noise down to the same crack that is of a .22 with high velocity bullets. Is this practical

the atec maxim with the two extra baffles is around €350 .

I had a t8 on my 204 and at the gun the sound is similar to that of a 22 using hv but downrange where your shooting at its still very loud as your breaking the sound barrier anyways

Ye I believe there is no reall way of changing that. But let's say behind the gun a coue of hundred yards back is it still as loud or just out to the front.

behind the gun there is no issue , in general a silenced centerfire is never going to be quiet but mods have a huge affect on the loudness

The atec maxim 4 is 80g lighter than the sonic and the atec cmm4 is less than half the sonics weight roedale also make lighter mods

Roedale are suppose to be good alright but I haven seen one that goes over the barrel only one that extends out of it.

Thanks for the advice lads. will keep in mind for when i get a few bob together. as season is just around corner i,ll see how i get on with it for a while. as it came with rifle as package i,d no idea how much they are to buy. as i said before it really makes rifle very quite so i guess i,ll settle for a lot of rested shots or might invest in a good set of sticks. Thanks again.

What's the difference between a mod that goes over the barrel and a mod that screws onto the end. Apart from the obvious of coarse.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,697 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

Balance, ease of use, and effectiveness i'd imagine.

A mod, regardless of weight, screwed directly onto the muzzle will add weight to the end of the gun and make it muzzle heavy. An over the barrel mod, will feel as though it weighs less even if it doesn't. Balance.

An over the barrel mod will not add serious length to the rifle, and hence keep overall length short, and easier to use. Imagine a muzzle mounted mod that is 6 inches long screwed onto a 24" barrel. You now have a 30" "barrel/mod". A mod that screws down over the barrel, and is 6 inches long might only protrude 2-3 inches past the muzzle so your overall length is 26-27 inches.

Lastly effectiveness. A mod works by letting the gases expand, and cool. The bigger a mod is the more room for expansion and cooling. An over the barrel mod can be 8-10 inches long while only protruding 4-5" past the muzzle while a muzzle mounted mod can only be 5-6" long otherwise the size/length becomes a major issue. hence over barrel mods can be more effect.

    Just my thoughts.
