Just curious as to who you think is the worst film director and what did she/he do to urn your wrath?

For me its Joel Schumacher for 'Batman and Robin'

    In before Michael Bay! :pac:

Can you really blame the director in this day and age? He was basically making an hour and a half long product placement feature and as such probably achieved exactly what they set out to achieve. He was just one part of a juggernaut of terribleness.

If you look at a lot of low budget films you'll see real bad directors, once someones made it to a certain level they're probably technically proficient directors that don't get to make good films.

    M. Night Shamylan (or however you spell his name)

    Lady In The Water
    The Happening
    etc etc

Apart from The Sixth Sense, anything this guy is involved in is guaranteed to be sh*t.

    I'd rank his films thus

    Unbreakable
    Sixth sense
    Signs
    The villlage

Haven't seen the rest of his films and by all accounts that's a good thing.

How about Wooody Allen? He's kind of like Marmite - you either love him or hate him. Personally, I don't get the affection for his movies.

Ever? Big word that, kinda redundant really

but in terms of modern times? It can only be Tommy Wiseau. No one.else comes close when it comes to an artistic vision only matched by such an utter absence of talent.

Michael Bay, for all his many many faults, is a glorified porn director and once upon a time could actually direct an action film. His trainwrecks are a force of nature really. Wiseau hits Ed Wood heights / lows of directing

Uwe Boll's got to be a contender.

Uwe Boll's a pretty smart film maker. He makes massive flops on purpose to fund his own (Very good) movies. Check out Stoic or Rampage for two examples.

I don't care how smart a film maker he is, i'll never watch anything with his named tagged onto it after all the game to movie conversions he butchered.

Neil Burger. For Limitless, anyway. Wooly-headed direction and had no craft to even tie the loose ended garbage up into a passable flick. Can't say I stuck with The Illusionist either.

Death Wish is noteworthy, the sequels were crap but the original was and still is brilliant imo. Neil Jordan's The Brave One is pretty much a direct copy of it, as are other countless revenge flicks.

Depends what you mean by "worst". Michael Bay makes one terrible movie after another but he knows what he's doing and is very successful at it.

If we're going after guys who made terrible movies on a big scale then I probably mention guys like Tim Story and Stuart Baird. They've both made what I consider to be technically awful blockbuster franchise movies that flopped and more or less became directorial career-killers for both.

Baird hasn't directed another movie in 11 years since Star Trek 10 and Story (who had been on the rise but handed in what I could only describe as a complete train-wreck of a movie with Fantastic Four 2) had to pretty much go back to square one again.

I've even listened to directors comms by these two guys and they give off an air that they simply don't 'get it' when it comes to directing. On the Comm for FF2 Story repeatedly talks about how he was blocked from doing "this-that-and-the-other" (basically he comes off as weak) and on ST10 Baird seemed to be obsessed with things like colour-schemes and picking the right looking phasers rather than delivering an interesting or exciting story.

It's all well and good to say Uwe Boll or Michael Bay make garbage, but at least they deliver the product (and after all that is all it is to them). In the case of Baird and Story I see two guys who were clearly out of their depth and dropped the ball in front of a wide audience.

That won't go down too well here!

though I hated ttol and the thin red line

On topic, having seen the director's cut of Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, I have severe reservations of Guy Richie. I'm sure he's probably not too highly acclaimed, but my god! Usually the Director's cut of a movie is a longer, superior version of the theatrical release, in the case of lock stock, the directors cut is a shambling mess, with an erratic pace and completely unnecessary dialogue.

Schumacher has made some very poor films but I don't think it's fair to put the blame for the travesty that was Batman & Robin at his feet. He job was nothing more than to make a film that made selling Happy Meal toys easy, the studio had no interest in anything other than merchandising.
Uwe Boll's got to be a contender.

Boll has made some terrible films but he's also in recent years redeemed himself with a number of very good ones. Rampage in particular is a great low budget film that really is worth a watch and Postal is one for anyone who enjoys a little black comedy.

Bruno Mattei has to step up and accept an award.

Sam Raimi too. Can't stand most of his pictures. 'A Simple Plan' is good though.

See this is the problem with threads like this. People just start listing directors they don't like as opposed to directors that could be called the 'worst director ever'.

I agree; clearly everyone's taste is different, there are no wrong opinions etc. etc. yada yada, but calling Nolan or Raimi the worst director 'ever' is a bit too hyperbolic by half. Either that or they just need to watch more films :D

Where do I say I'm unhappy?

And this isn't a list thread - they're banned under the charter - so we're all perfectly entitled to contend anyone's choices, no matter how hyperbolic they are, and all in the spirit of discssion :)

Chris Nolan the worst director ever? Overrated? Sure, I can see why people might say that. The worst ever? That's more than a little OTT tbh...

Unfortunately all those movies are 20 years old (or more)!
Burton has done very little of worth in recent times. While I liked a lot of his 80s and 90s stuff, I'd have to agree the neverending Depp and Bonham-Carter "playing quirky" show is getting really tiresome:(

Would certainly not consider him the worst director ever though....just a very irritating output in recent years!

I don't like Tyler Perry very much. Aside from the fact that his films are just plain sh*t, he's also quite complicit in perpetuating stereotypes about his own people and culture. But then, it seems a lot of people buy it, so I dunno..
