Having trouble with RULE #37

RULE #37 // The arms of the eyewear shall always be placed over the straps

A recent issue of Cyclist magazine (the best cycling mag around in my opinion) has an article about the etiquette involved in the wearing of cycling glasses. The most important rule in the wearing of sunglasses it seems, is that you ALWAYS place their arms outside the helmet straps. One ex-pro even went as far as to say he was 'Horrified' to see photos of sunglasses with their arms under the helmet straps. In fact the article ended by re-iterating the importance of rule #37. I'm relatively new to cycling and far be it from me to go around horrifying anybody but I've found that with the arms tucked inside the straps the glasses are held much more securely in place. I'm not really sure what to do!! Is adhering to the rules more important than putting up with mild irritation?

Anyway I'm about to read the next article in the magazine which tells you how to assess another rider at a race/event based on their bike(not joking)

It is horrifying that you see the need to ask the question

Isn't there a rule about not questioning the rules ?

Rules are Rules. If in doubt, refer to rule #5.

I know that I break rule#1 by saying this but someone would just take my lickle racer away from me if people were so damn stringent on these rules :)

You'll be grand! I follow rule#5 though so you shoulf repeat that to yourself if confronted in person by someone about rule #37 ;)

    Thanks,

    The V pronounced "five".

Ah, now I get it. Wasn't sure what they were going on about. Though it was just short for Velominati. #5 makes more sense.

I think I've broken nearly every single rule at least once by now. I'm going to make a list and see can I break every single one of them, with photo evidence.

I just want everyone to know that I now own two (2) pairs of cycling socks.

    I hope you're all happy.

The lexicon calls this "The Mastrubation Principle". Everyone breaks the rules occasionally due personal situations. It is understood may that you may need to do it from time to time, just don't ****ing brag about it.

I think, really, you need to talk to someone if this is bothering you that much.

I suggest talking to your sunglasses / eyewear sponsor in the first instance - if they are happy with their product being worn by you with the arms under the helmet straps then that's fine. If they insist it's arms outside then you need to have your agent talk to them and / or find a new eyewear sponsor........

Just don't turn up at the Leinster loop on Sunday with your sunglasses on all wrong and with black socks up to your knees. It's not a triathlon you know?

You really only need to obey rules 5 and 9

Blatantly flouting rule 33 for the last few years. Don't pay attention to them, most them are pretty laughable.

Rule #78 // Remove unnecessary gear.
As my commute is under 60 mins, does it count as a crit, and if so, should I remove my front basket?

Just so we're clear, which rules from the list will be subject to the on the spot fines?

Rule #37 allows one to remove sunglasses unhindered while riding, no chance of their catching in the strap. perfect sense.

Either you abide by the rules or you don't, there's no middle ground. You can make fun of the the rules and those who keep them and the rule keepers can make fun of those who refuse to keep them, but at the end of the day we know who looks best crossing a finish line with their hands in the air pointing to heaven.

It would be brilliant if the Gardai used "The Rules" in assessing fines. :)

    Rule #37 was written by;

A: Someone who gets their sunglasses for nothing and really doesn't mind losing them

    rather than

B: Someone who wears perscription lenses and really, really, REALLY doesn't want to lose them.

Arms of glasses outside straps is also a safety thing is it not? As in if you crash they won't be caught in position?

Anyway wrt The Rules, I was delighted to hear on Eurosport the other day that pros are now considering facial hair an aero advantage much like the dimples on a golf ball.

Soak some gels into the beard before the race too. Right next to your mouth and saves the effort of messing with packaging :pac:
