one of the screws on the socket face is broken off in its retainer. so the whole face is currently only being held on with just the one screw. I want to replace the socket backing bit it looks to me like it's held in place with nails...see pic. how do I get this off?

Hammer and old screwdriver (chisel)around the washernail to break the plastic box. Then hammer the washernail flush into wall. Fit new box over the flushed nails.
You could also just drill into the wall where the lug is missing
Stick in a rawlplug and suitable wood screw.
