It's a personal view but it seems like a sportive but then it's timed and they publish a list of 'winning' times, which seems all wrong. On a positive note I can go past some friends' houses and get 'close' to the pros, but the scenery is hardly compelling. Price?

Entered the ballot. Might as well at least try while I'm living over here!

I must admit it does feel strangely tempting though

Can Irish residents apply in the ballot? There's a drop down for country so it looks like you can but I had thought there was a different entry system for international entries?

me too, but my buddy never bothered his arse to sign up.

my cousin lives over there so would be a good excuse to go over for a few days, but not sure about cycling round on me own... though im sure i will get chatting to a few heads, it's still nicer when you actually know somebody

Successful here too and really tempted. What are opinions on hiring a bike over there? I'd obviously rather my own bike, especially when you're talking 160km, but not sure about carrying bike on plane. Don't really fancy getting the ferry and driving to London either.

There's some good YouTube videos of last years event which shows some of the hills - Leith Hill, Box Hill etc. Seems like a great day.

I'm considering boat and train... probably cheaper than car... unless the wife and kids want to come

edit.. just checked and if im doing it right, its only €107 for sail and rail to london... how bad

That's pretty reasonable alright and certainly an option. Looks like bringing the car works out very expensive even without considering fuel costs.

In terms of the hiring opting, has anybody any experience of hiring or borrowing a bike for an event like this? I'd dread to get half way through and be struggling with the bike.

I'll be going over for it, my bike will be coming on the plane with me (Aer Lingus).

No Box/packaging required and last time I flew it over from Belgium it was fine, just turn the bars lower the seat and let a bit of air out the tyres.

so let me get this right, you didn't pack your bike up at all whatsoever?

all i was looking at says you must have it bagged or boxed.

i was thinking of flying, but i don't have a box / bag, and don't see the benefit of getting one for a once off trip. would also like to just get on my bike when i get to london airport and cycle to my destination so would a bag even fold up enough to be able to carry.

now if i don't need to bag it up at all, then happy days..... can get a flight including bike for €140ish

Aer Lingus don't need a box:

Unless you're going from Amsterdam it seems. I flew from Brussels to Cork and just had to do the above. I did remove my pedals and lower the tyres a bit as well as the seat post and Handlebars but other than that they transported it fine.

I have seen people reporting as well if you ask a LBS nicely they might lend you a cardboard box you can duct tape up with your bike in and then attempt the same on the other end.

spotted this on another cheaper filght
We will accept non-motorised bicycles up to 190cm (75in) in length, provided they are packed in a recognised bicycle bag.

    Please ensure that you:

pack the bike in a protective case or bag
remove the pedals or fix them inwards
    fix the handlebars sideways
deflate the tyres to reduce the risk of damage

I have a huge sports gear bag in the attic, might get it down at the weekend and see if I can get the bike in it

Are the entries transferrable? If so and someone had an entry but doesn't want to go I'd be willing to take it of your hands, naturally happy to pay costs involved assuming they are not crazy. Moved over to London a couple of months back so planning on doing a few events if possible.
