Does anyone know if a phone can be used for gps mapping without a sim card inserted ? The data could then be uploaded over wifi at home. Its a samsung galaxy y on vodafone. if not i may get it unlocked as i aint paying 20 euros month just for credit for tracking. I have gotten a new phone but wont be putting it to use for cycling  as i find its very diffucult to stop moisture getting to the phone :(

I use strava on an old samsung Galaxy mini without a sim card (it is a meteor phone) . It works great . Save recording after ride and when I am in a wifi area (home) it updates.

Runtastic does this. I used it while abroad and I could disable data, track my cycle and then upload via wifi later.

Navigon works well. The maps are stored on the phone so it doesn't need a connection apart from the GPS. It costs money though, probably €50-€80 depending on which OS and whether you catch a special offer. It is a full featured piece of software more in line with dedicated GPS devices though, than with free GPS applications on a phone.

edit: It's good as a routefinder at least. Not sure if you can record your route, which I think is what you are looking for, on second glance.

There's a whole load of free stuff out there, you can use Google MyTracks or ViewRanger as well as the aforementioned Mapmyride.

    OP try OSMtracker:
    https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdfilter=osmtracker&fdid=me.guillaumin.android.osmtracker

or install f-droid (it's like google play just with open source software) https://f-droid.org/ and then install osmtracker
