Wedding in Portugal

I had my heart set on a wedding in Portugal but the planners are sending me quotes well in excess of what I would expect to pay here! Circa 90euro pp for the hotel. Is this standard or would I get better if I approach places myself. It's hard to find venues online as unlike Irish hotels they don't seem to put up brochures. Any suggestions from anyone married in the Algarve or knows anyone who did it welcome!!

Also, what is the standard procedure re gifts for a wedding abroad? I was think if we set up a website or print on invites we can add something along the line of presence not presents - we do not expect gifts given that guests are going to such expense to get there. I know a lot of people think if you spend a lot of money travelling give a token gift, but I don't want people travelling with wine glasses or vases etc and I can't get them home!!

Hi Sala I'm also getting married in the Portugal firstly have contacted a few wedding planners in the area and two of them were quick in responding. May I ask you which planner are you in contact with? I know of one that charges high quotes for venues and suppliers maybe is that the one you are in contact with.
I'm now hopping to organize it myself despite that both of us work abroad and have not much time for this but after receiving quotes from wedding planners on venues and suppliers I know have planned to contact the venues and suppliers directly online have now narrowed up to two venues canico restaurant in Alvor and setima onda restaurant in Albuferia both with great sea views.
Have contacted suzannah flowers, helio photography and pre-booked a day package with the band double cocktail that are brilliant musicians and entertainers they seem to be very popular with Irish weddings abroad so I guess no worries here.
Maybe you could also do a search online nowadays there are plenty of venues and suppliers offering their services directly with better quotes than through a wedding planner. Also don’t think you should expect gifts from your guests after all they are already paying for their own flights and accommodation and will be present on your wedding day and that’s the best gift you can get, besides if you get too many gifts you will have to pay for the extra weight when going back home lol

Hope this was of help to you. happy planning
