'08 Mondeo 2.0 TDCI,Timing Belt Interval.

    Hi all,My Mondeo zetec estate is approaching 180k,
    it's a '08 2.0 tdci 6spd manual,dealer says 200k is when it's due a timing belt
    but getting a little nervous of it,should I do it a little earlier or will it be OK to 200k?

    No harm in getting it done a bit early, you might get a few mile after it no problem, but not worth the risk. The belt is not going to snap at 200,001klms, well it shouldn't anyway.

    Just concerned about storys of the 1.8 diesel engines breaking the belts before they are due,
    anyone ever heard of the 2.0 breaking early?

    No the 2.0 should be fine for the 200k.

    The problems with the 1.8 are confined to the wet belt setup they began using in 2008. The 2.0 uses a conventional setup and won't suffer the same issues.

    That great,Thanks,due to drive it across the UK again soon so was a little concerned.

    Is the belt difficult to replace on the 2.0?
    I always service my own car(using genuine parts)but maybe I'd be better off getting the local Ford dealer replace the belt?

    It's probably a bit beyond the scope of a normal DIY-er.

    You should be able to get the timing belt kit and water pump done in an independent garage for around €350. That would be using good quality aftermarket parts. The genuine Ford water pump is pretty expensive so if you wanted to use Ford parts it would cost more. If you used the main dealer for the job it would most likely cost more again.

    Have replaced belts in the past with no problems,but just unsure of the difficulty of the one in my Mondeo.
    Will use genuine parts though,sometimes the extra cost is worth it in terms of reliability.
    Didn't know that the water pump would need replacing though,
    does it run off the timing belt then?

    Yes the water pump runs off the timing belt so it is definitely worth replacing at the same time.

    Overall it's not a particularly difficult job as far as timing belt replacements go so if you have done belts before then you will manage it ok.

    I got a quote for a 1.8tdci for €575, don't know if a 2.0 would be more expensive though.

    Just a quick follow up on this,

    Replaced the belt last saturday,mileage 196,500km.
    Belt was starting to look it's age,but have seen worse.
    water pump was starting to leak,and had a slight tight spot in it,
    tensioners felt fine,but were replaced with new.

    I used a SKF kit,that came with everything needed to do the job,
    Belt,
    Tensioners,
    water pump,
    Crankshaft bolt.

    I did price the parts from Ford,they wanted around €400,for the kit.
    Was quoted €650 for the job,inc parts from Ford.

    Paid €130 for the SKF kit,plus another €20 for a new auxillary drive belt (SKF)
    plus another €20 for the correct coolant.

    Took me about 3-4 hours to fit,
    using a fairly basic tool kit.
    I did have access to a cordless impact wrench(snapon)
    that made removing the crankshaft bolt very easy.

    Didn't have any locking tools,
    used an 8mm bolt to lock the camshaft,and just marked the crankshaft with some tipp-ex,worked out fine.
    Crankshaft pully is "loose" on the keyway on the crankshaft,
    never encountered this before,but on checking up is normal for the engine.

    After fitting the belt,I turned the engine over a few times,then lined up the timing marks to make sure everything was ok,before putting it all back together.

    Car back together and running well,
    Hopefully shes good for another 200k now:D
