The FIDE World Cup is starting in Tromso in Norway this weekend. The first round starts at 2pm Irish time on Sunday. There are 128 participants and it is run on a knockout basis. All the top players are there except Carlsen, Anand, Topalov and Deng Liren.

There is a prediction competiition where you can win a prize for correctly predicting the results. The competition is here: http://chessprediction.ardalen.com/registration.asp?comp=1. You can only enter the competition up until the start of the first round. I'm quietly confident of receiving my signed FIDE chess board ...

The official site is http://www.chessworldcup2013.com/ and they will have live games, etc.

Kramnik's now the first through to round five. The commentary's really excellent, it's interesting to watch Polgar and Trent analysing games on the fly like this.

Naka Blew it today! Bit of Karma as he insulted Korobov when they played on the ICC.
Naka had a draw on move 18 with Nxe5 but said on twitter he thought he had enough for the win.

Kamsky's game was great again today.

Kamsky's game was great again today.
Yeah, that Qh4 was a real rabbit from a hat, though he didn't seem to think much of the game when doing the interview afterwards, he seemed less impressed with his save and more annoyed at letting it get to where he had to save it.

Kramnik -v- Andreikin starting at 1400h our time today for the finals of the World Cup...

    Also, from Susan Polger's blog:
    Inaugural LIVE commentary on Twitter

I will be doing LIVE commentary on Twitter for the Tromsø World Cup final between Kramnik and Andreikin starting tomorrow. My twitter account is @SusanPolgar.

There is a special twist during the commentary every day. During each game at random times, the organizer will announce the official contest at @Tromso2014. It will go something like:

"Contest time! The 11th tweet (different order each day) with the word Tromsø (different word each day) will be the winner!"

If you have the 11th tweet with the right word of the day, you will win a special World Cup memorabilia signed by both players and me.

The contest announcement will only come from the official twitter account. Therefore, please make sure you follow @tromso2014 to participate in this contest.

    And Kramnik wins!

    From the Tromso website:

Vladimir Kramnik claimed victory in the FIDE World Cup after he drew the fourth classical game in the final match against Dmitry Andreikin. The overall score in the match was 2.5:1.5 in Kramnik's favor. The former World Champion won the first game of the final match while the other three games finished in a draw.
