    Dia dhaoibh,

I'm just wondering, has there been any movement on the creation of new Gaeltacht areas in places like Clondalkin, Ennis etc.? There was a lot of talk about it last year, but there doesn't seem to have been any kind of update on the issue since.

Anyone know anything more about it? Did Clondalkin succeed in getting Gaeltacht status?

There is no talk of places like Clondalkin getting Gaeltacht status. They could in theory be granted Gaeltacht status by the Minister, but they would have to meet linguistic criteria for being a Gaeltacht like the existing ones, Ie somthing around 40% of the population of the area speaking Irish.

What has been set out in the Gaeltacht act is that areas like Clondalkin could gain status as a 'Líonra Gaeilge', ie an area that has a strong network of Irish speakers, this is not the same as being a Gaeltacht however. As far as I know these will be progressing over the next couple of years along with language planning in Gaeltacht areas and the formal designation of the 'Bailte Seirbhisí Gaeltachta'

Ah I see. There was some interview done a while back with a representative from Clondalkin who seemed to imply that they were applying pretty much straight away for Gaeltacht status, but I may have misunderstood.

Is this the same thing that's happening in Ennis so?

Havent heard about Ennis, if its the town itself, then it is almost certainly a 'Líonra Gaeilge' I did hear about a campaign in west Clare to get actual Gaeltacht status, but it is an area that was formerly a Gaeltacht (Pre 1950's) so there are supposed to be a good few Irish speakers in the area.

I seem to remember someone proposing a few other areas become Líonraí, such as Glanmire here in Cork. I live near Glanmire, and albeit that there are two primary gaelscoileanna and one secondary, the actual Irish-speaking community there is pretty much zero.

Well, it's early days yet I guess, Rome wasn't built in a day

Nach bhfuil eastát tithíochta ina bhfuil teaghlaigh ghaelacha in aice le Coláiste an Phiarsaigh i nGleann Maghair? Bhíodh Tomás Ó Canainn (iar-bhall den ghrúpa ceoil "Na Filí") agus teaghlaigh ghaelacha eile ina gcónaí ann (agus b'fhéidir go bhfuil sé fós ann).

Is cuimhin liom gur dúirt Baile Gaelach é sin, ach ní fhaca mé riamh é. B'fhéidir gi bhfuil teach amháin nó dhá ann in aice leis an gaelscoil, ach táim cinnte nach bhfuil 'mini-gaeltacht' againn anseo
