Cork's RED FM signal?

    Quick question here:

I used to be able to get a fairly strong signal for RED FM up until recently (don't know how recently, not a regular listener so it could have been months since I last checked) but now I can just about get a weak static-filled signal.

According to the all knowing Wikipedia the 105.0 frequency in Newmarket is "inactive". Anyone know what the story there is?

105.7 you're receving I presume? Fairly sure RedFM did changes to their transmissions last year because 105.7 has got slightly weaker where I live too (around the same distance from the 105.7 transmitter as you are). 104.5 is still the same here.

The 105.0 from what I've seen was from the phone masts in Scarteen in Newmarket, located above the town. As far as I know it was turned off ~2008, probably surplus to requirements because most of it's coverage area can get acceptable signal on 105.7.

Yeah, it was 105.7 I was getting alright (just checked). I can just about make out music/speech on it, but it's overpowered by static. Can't get anything else (104-105 is all 4FM).

At least I know it's not just my radio anyway if it's gotten weaker for you too. :)

You should be able to get 4FM on 104.2 and 104.6 up your part of the country, but if the radio is good enough to get them it should be able to get RedFM on 105.7 cos it's a lot strong than those two.

Perhaps it's on low power for the week.

Really? That's good news IMO. Is he going 10-1 or just 10-12 do you know?

Used to love that show when it was on at night. Nothing like loads of angry Cork people shouting at each other. I don't know why I liked it, given I loathe the equivalent shows on FM104, 4FM et al.

They seem to be losing their appeal their market share must be small.

They've been in big trouble along time now. Even their "dependable" jocks are doing interviews with stations left right and centre and I'm not talking about nationals... Entire station is a mess in my eyes!

Great decision. Before now it was a choice between Neil Prendeville, Victor Barry, Patricia Messenger, Tubs/Colm Hayes and Ray Darcy in Cork, at last there's one station playing music. Plus before now there was a repeat of VB from 11-12 so it doesn't really make much of a schedule difference at night. Dave Mac's hours cut tho from 4-7

Disagree there. Always thought Dave Mac was a quality presenter (I'd listen to him more only I don't listen to Red FM that often because their playlist is very limited and repetitive)

Same. I always liked Dave. Back in '07-'08 I could happily listen to RED from 6am to 1am straight.

KC and Lenny still doing the Rooster, then I believe Dave Mac and Philip Burke (I think) during the day - more for the music than the presenters tbh - then Stevie G doing drive and the Hitlist and Vic Barry until whenever he decided he was finished (used love when he'd go way overtime just messing around).

They were streets ahead of SPIN back then in terms of the youth market IMO, even if it wasn't/isn't their target demographic per se.

But anyway, just to finish up with what this thread was actually about, it turns out that the antenna in my hifi wasn't connected properly. I could get every other station bar RED with it. Managed to fix it today with a lot of fiddling and a large piece of blu-tack (connector on the antenna is broken) and now I have RED clear again. :)

    :)
It used be Phil and Martina (I think was her name) during the day. Dave mac eould only do the odd weekend. ristard cooper was the time swimg jock... Playlist was about the same size but alot less indie ****e more "hit music/ dance" then Colm o Sullivan came in and messed it up!
Red FM is shadow of its former self and is very poor in alot of areas now IMO

Was it Colm used to do Green on RED on Sunday evenings? Can't remember if that was him but used to love that show. Love all that "indie ****e" as you put it. :pac:

Another great show was Black on RED. Nothing like Stevie G's Cork accent talking about hip-hop. :pac:

Yeah, noticed that alright. How recent are they?

Not sure about them tbh, they just kind of sound "meh" to me (admittedly I haven't listened all that much). The old ones were badly in need of a reboot though in fairness. :P

Unfortunately for Red FM they lost the talent that built that station. They had the best breakfast show in Ireland and Colm O' Sullivan ( Today FM) as P.D. and now they don't.

Now they have the one of the most uncomfortable sounding breakfast shows, some young lad at 10am who's only offering is to shout the text number 40 times a show

You have an experienced presenter like Philip Bourke who could have done the 10 -3 shift really well ( Like Barry Dunne or Andy Preston in Dublin)

There's no 'I must tune into' presenters. It's a very bland pop station with no imagination with DJ's that sound board out of their heads.

The website is absolutely disgraceful. According to it, Vic Barry is on weekday's at 9am?? The breakfast show have put up 5 pieces of audio in the last 6 months !!

They have Spin South West's Breakfast Show presenter on Sundays 2pm - 6pm

Why would you bring in a competitors breakfast show presenter into your market for a weekend music shift?

Right now RedFM is a total mess.
