Freesat from Sky

    Hi,

I've been thinking about ditching my Sky sub for several months now. Initially I was going to get a Freesat pvr but I haven't been able to decide which box to go for.

I'm now considering keeping my SKY+HD box and getting a "Freesat from Sky" card. My question is, is there any way of me keeping my pvr functionality on my Sky box. I have a vague memory that I may have read somewhere that I can continue to pay Sky just for the pvr functionality. Anyone know if this is correct? And if yes, how much it costs?

    Thanks in advance.

You wont get that card from Sky for use here in Ireland and if you are not a Sky subscriber then you loose the Sky+ features.

if I got a freesat from sky card would it work in a regular sat receiver with a card slot to allow you view the ftv channels e.g. Motors tv, channel 5 hd and 4 music etc? curious

Sky swithc off the recording facility if you cancel, and in the UK I think it was £10 per month for them to re-enable it.

Do yourself a favour, cancel it and buy yourself a Humax or any other decent Freesat+ box, you won't regret it.

What do you mean by 'regular' sat receiver? If you mean a non Sky box then most likely not BUT there are a few boxes out there that it will enable these channels in, you would have to use non official firmware though.
I had an Mvision once that had firmware these cards worked in and there were a few others but can't think of the name of them off the top of my head.

Niman was responding to the OP ;)

To answer your question, it can be done on certain receivers, but, depending on how you set up your receiver, you may need a Sky receiver to return the card to every few weeks.

"Freesat from Sky" cards are no longer available officially but a card from Setanta Ireland would give you the channels you require.

No, it wouldn't, the Setanta card would not give you Channel 5HD or 4Music.

When you cancel the card defaults to a Freesat from Sky card, you don't need to get one. That's what happens in the UK, I assume it also applies to Ireland. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Anyway you don't need one, all the free to air channels are available without a card at all. The card will only add a few Sony channels and other odd ones.

I think you're in the UK so things are a little different here unfortunately. Anyone with a HD box, which is what most people have, will find that their ex Sky sub card is worthless as the boxes revert to the ROI EPG which doesnt have any any of the FTA channels. Older boxes will have the UK EPG.

In saying that the FTA channels can be added to the "other channels" but its not the same though.
