I can only give my observations as i don't have one, but my mate does for his two labs.

The dogs get a nip if they stray too close to the wire and for the most part they work. However there have been occasions when one dog takes a run at something on the road and makes it through the fencing. He gets zapped, but at the speed he is traveling he "breaks" on through. Then it actually prevents the dog from coming back as he cannot cross over back into the yard without getting zapped again.

This only happened a couple of times, but now the dog realises he cannot go near the boundaries without getting a nip from the collar. So results at the start were not great, but not a failure either. Since then not a bother (apparently).

This is a regular subject of 'debate' over in the Animals & Pet Issues forum, with the great majority of the regular posters there against them.
Do a search there and have a read, and see what you think of the arguments yourself.

PLEASE consider your words very carefully if you choose to post on the subject there, these threads often end up locked with people banned/infracted!

Tell them the hunting forum sent you OP.
Mention something about "fur babies" and I'm sure you'll do fine..........

For the record I have one of these fences combined with a closed front gate and it works like a dream.
There are a lot of sheep around me and I would be extra careful on keeping my lads in check.

I bought one of these it was ****e I'll be honest. The collar is weak as feck the dogs didn't feel it at all so they went where they liked. In the end I got a petfence it's a great job would highly recommend it.

Have a petfence for my dog brilliant easy to train last dog picked up the system fast as well,If you think you can get over shocking your dog its great,Only thing is where the prongs go you have to shave their neck if it is a very hairy dog.

Saves them getting killed IMO :)

As far as I know they come in different strengths for the size of the dog. My mate has one he only needed to have it on for a couple of weeks to train the dog and he hasn't turned it on since. He swears by it.

Get a strong one and be done with it. Also I think you can get wire out of hardware etc which will do your full perimeter. Instead of spending big money on the bigger kit with more wire.

thanks for the replies lads is it not the pet fence that i have linked

doesnt mention the strength of the shocking ability but says it can be increased or decreased

i dont mind shocking the dog for a while its a better option for her rather than haven to be locked in as im not home to build a decent pen

Got a beagle my self but she does like to stray when left in the garden on her own, even after 2 hrs hiking. Ive got a basic innotek system. It hasn't varying level of adjustments, its all or nothing, but the way i look at it is. Dogs are smart, its only going to take a couple beeps for it to get the idea once you follow the training instructions. They give you flags to put around the boundary. Get close to a flag you get a beep take 2 more steps and to get a zap. soon a beep and they just turn around. This for me was reality. Dogs aren't stupid and cop on very quickly. My beagle can tell by the beep when the battery is low and she can push a bit further. but keep and reminder on a calendar to change the batter ever 2 mts and your fine.
This is the model i have

They only really work when the boundary is around some sort of fencing. For me we have a old wall surrounding the house. The dog can scale it in a second but not with the invisible fence. You need something to slow the dog as it gets to the boundary so when it does try get through once or twice it realises its not possible. If these exits you say you have in your situation are holes in a fence or a low wall these fences will work but if its a gaping hole in your boundaries they won't.

Implemented properly its a safe and cost effective solution to your problem. But do go for a reputable brand not a unbranded ebay dealer

+1 on this. My sister has one for her beagle. It's brilliant and given that the wire is marked with little white flags the dog knows exactly where the bounderies are. However, if the dog does manage to break through there is no way to get him back in, even switching off the fence has no effect as the dog doesn't know that. I wouldn't trust it for that reason if there is nobody in the house.

We have two of these providing free roam for 7 dogs over a 1.5 acre site at the homeplace, but not beyond.

Dogs range from Rottweiler to Miniature Dachshund. The collars aren't on them full time and they all know exactly what it means when they're wearing them.

Collar gives a beep about 1m from the edge of the boundary as a warning, once the boundary threshold is crossed, the collar will continue to beep and shock at regular intervals until they come back inside - so there's no "breaking through" with this system.

There was a "learning" phase of about two weeks and remarkably it was the smaller dogs that tested the boundary more often than the larger ones, they basically got the idea after the first two or three instances.

Highly recommended where boundary integrity is either two awkward to maintain, or you've got houdini's. In our case it was a measure of both. ;)
