I'll be in Kiev, Odessa and Pripyat/Chernobyl next week.

Any advice from a photography perspective? Any suggestions on places to visit?

I've basically done no research since I booked it two months ago and my holiday is suddenly right around the corner.

Cheers. Pity you can't enter the buildings anymore.

You can find tour guides that will bring you into some of the buildings, AFAIK some UK based ones too!

Myself and a few other boardies are talking about heading next year.

Pity, there are some remarkable neighborhoods there! Was an incredibly rich city at some stage. Even the burbs are interesting for the most part. Hotel Lviv is also worth a visit if for completely different reasons. A concrete Stalinist hotel that is exactly as it would have been 40 years ago. Dial up phones and all. Ironically beefy security for a kip too. Opera house is stunning, and something interesting around every conrner

I remember reading a blog about a trip to Chernobyl/Pripyat. I think it was called Stuck in Customs. Might be worth a google

Thank you, but my hatred for Trey Ratcliff is such that I would probably burst into flames if I visited his website.

I'll check out those city guides, thanks.

Well, maybe I'll try and get there. I'm in Ukraine for 6 days, so in a sense ther eis plenty of time, it's just that I don't want to be rushing around and spending my time on trains/buses. I like to spend a bit of time in a new place.

Would those flames be rendered in unrealistic HDR?

Absolutely! It's closer to how the human eye perceives flames. Especially the tone-mapping artifacts and the halos.

It is a big country mind... Would take 6 hours or more to get from Kiev I would imagine. Really must check out piriat myself! How much is that trip costing you, if you don't mind me asking

€140, including travel from Kiev, permits and meals. With lupinetravel.co.uk

All the tour operators seem to charge around €150, give or take.

They also do an overnight stay, but it's only available on specific dates during the year.

Be weary of "local" and "tourist" prices for everything ;) There are a lot of locals that will happily screw you, especially taxi companies.

Ne'er a truer word was spake.

Absolutely beautiful country, but what a bunch of scammers they have living there!
