How do I get my tax back?

I'm a student and had a summer job for 5 weeks this summer. Out of my wage I was deducted Superannuation, PAYE and Universal Social Charge to which took away about one fifth of my total salary after the 5 weeks finished.

I have very little knowledge of how taxation works but I am unemployed and studying in college so didn't think I needed to pay so much tax since I was only working for 5 weeks.

Could anyone shine some light on this for me and tell me if or what parts of my deductions I am entitled to get back and how and when I can do so the easiest way.

A friend of mine said he used a online site where they do all of the work for you at a 10% expense but I have no problem doing it myself provided I find out how.

I received my p45 from the employer last week to show my employment is terminated but am not sure where to go from here in order to get my tax back.

PAYE anytime is a great site to apply for tax back and is pretty easy to use. You just need to register and they will send you a pin, you can automatically calculate your tax return on it. Also governement run so there is no charge for using it.

So is it just PAYE I can get back? Not superannuation and USC?

That I'm afraid I couldn't tell you, there might be some boardsies who have a clearer understanding of your entitlements, not sure if the site will factor those in but might well do if you have tax credits outstanding.

Its funny I asked one friend of mine he said I can get superannuation back, I ask another, he says I cant. It seems like most young people really don't have much of a clue about taxes and what they might be owed.

Its really a failing on both sides here. Basic taxation should be taught in secondary schools as part of a wider basic lifeskills program.

Also those who have little or no understanding of taxation should make the effort to look at the resources already in place for them. If you have done maths to a secondary school level then basic taxation is no problem to you, it just takes a little time.

Also, superannuation is not a tax. Its a pension related deduction. You will need to contact your former employer to see what the arrangements are for refunding it.
