Memberships have come down a serious ammount the last few years, the gym im in atbthe moment i used to pay €60 a month back in the day now i pay €37.50! Great value for the equipment and facilities. If your looking at spending €250 just on the bench you will prob spend that and more on the weights and bars and then how much more on other equipment? Thats alot of months of gym membership!

    37.50 x 12 = 450.

For maybe an extra 200 max you'll pick up some decent gear for a first set up. Which will still work out cheaper than most memberships. Also, the equipment is his to do as he wishes.

You don't have to adhere to the gyms timetable, work out whenever you want! Can't sleep - work out.

    No queuing for equipment.

An investment other members of the family can use for free and will be encouraged to use.

Saves you time in the morning if you prefer to work out then.

No going home and having to go back out or stop off on your way home.

And of course, shower at home afterwards. Much prefer home a gym!! :)

OP, there's a couple of threads on here about home gyms. Check them out.

Saw one on www.fitness-superstore.co.uk. Check them out.

Yup thats all true! Each to their own, Me personally i prefer going to the gym, did the whole home workout in the past and it wasnt for me... Doesnt take away from the fact though that gyms are offering great value these days and i certainly wouldnt consider mine expensive

I'd be looking for a good second hand one on adverts.ie , it will hold its value if you want rid of it, in fact it might have increased in value as steel goes up. I could probably get more for my old plates than I paid for them new.

    I have this

    http://www.teamwearireland.com/bodymax-cf328-deluxe-flat-incline-decline-utility-bench-76-p.asp

It's grand. A good bit cheaper than your budget and it's survived my efforts to destroy it in a damp shed for 3 years now.

Most importantly it's dead flat with straight down sides, You can't bench correctly with your shoulder blades pinched on a bench with rounded edges, you'll roll off. That's pretty much the only thing you need to consider with a bench.

about to purchase the bench this week now down to 199 euros :) it has a squat rack with it so that why i think its best option. as then i wont need to buy a power rack about to get an olympic set of weight as my standard barbell isnt capable of taking so much weight .
cant wait to get some good training in at 6 am and enjoying the shower afterwards

That bench is no longer available, unfortunately. I rang them to check about it and they're changing their gym equipment supplier.

I didn't buy it there. Can't remember the name of the place I bought it from. Used to be in Coolmine, closed, re-opened dunno if it's still around.

    Bodymax are available pretty extensively.

OP you've probably made up your mind and know what you are doing... but I'd like to add a bit to anyone reading this and thinking of getting a bench for Christmas

You need a spotter to bench safely or a power-rack, I don't mean to be a buzz kill but people have died and continue to die benching at home

As an alternative you can Overhead Press, they are also better for the shoulders

dont need a power rack as i only bench with dumbells

Good call, and dumbells are also better for the shoulders!
Like I said I just wanted to put it out there, I had a good feeling you had it covered.
