Am I right in thinking those already on btea (halfway through a course) are not affected by the changes in payment rates to their btea for the remainder of their course. i.e. if you will continue to receive the max rate, without being means tested...

I realise the book allowance has gone for everyone

BTEA isn't means tested it just means if you are a new applicant you will stay on what ever rate you are on at the moment .

And if your an existing applicant you will remain on the same rate as last yr? Im on JSA atm which is less than btea. Last yr this increased when i went back to college. I assume same will happen in. Sept?

    Budget 2013
The Cost of Education Allowance of €300 that was payable to Back to Education Allowance participants was discontinued for new and existing participants. (2013)

The weekly rate payable to new Back to Education Allowance participants is now equal to their previous social protection payment. (1 January 2013)

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

There is no need to worry. DSP site is very clear on this.

People who were getting a Back to Education Allowance before 1 January 2013 are not affected by the Budget 2013 changes and continue to be paid at the same rate.

Eugh, I guess that means me and my OH are stuck on our couples rate when we get our BTEA. That's €156 each which is a struggle as it is and will be worse when we factor in travel expenses getting to college!
