I'm in the market to pick up the son a little Android player for his 4th bday. His older sister got a Chinese Android 7" for her birthday and though he'd love one of those I'm thinking along the lines of a ipod touch type device. Have seen that Samsung have a similar device to the ipod touch called a Samsung Galaxy player. Can't find the 3.6" model around at a decent price but there a few refurbs of the 4.2" on Amazon. I'm guessing a few of their phones also have the same functionality and could simply be used for music/games without a sim card ... so any suggestions for the other devices I should consider?

Of course I should say I've left this purchase a bit late and only have 3 weeks to source so I'm ruling out anything that involves potential customs delays etc.

    I'd definitely go for bigger than a 3.6", that's a very small size. 4.2" ain't bad.

    What's a rough budget?

A 3.6 phone would be a lot easier for a 4 year old to hold though. I wouldn't worry about the screen size though OP, He is going to be holding it with both hands any way.

As Niall said Whats the budget?

Was speaking to the other half tonight and I think we'd be willing to stretch to €100 ... any ideas?

I had a quick look i found the Galaxy Player on Amazon but with the Eur exchange rate and delivery it'll be about 150 Euro.

Basically what your looking for is a decent entry level android device. From what i know (and i could very well be wrong is that Android phone should work fine without a sim card)

There is a very helpful thread you should look at

It talks about cheap android phones, I've heard great things about Huawei. They have decent phones at cheap prices.

You could also look into second hand android devices?

Edit** Some Galaxy S1's Available for around 100 quid?

Sorry, but perhaps I'm reading this thread wrong, but you want to get your child an Android-like device, and you are assuming that because the child is only 4 that the device should have a small screen?

I think you'll find that logic doesn't really work. The only reason to ever have a small screen device is if you want to fit it into your pocket or if you want to put it near your ear. Your child will want to play games on it, paint and draw on it, you will want to read him/her bedtime stories from it and you will want to install educational apps like basic math etc. to teach him/her.

I would recommend getting a generic Chinese tablet like you got for your other child and getting a good case for it. Since you said you're in a bit of a rush either pay for express delivery or pick up similar tablets from Amazon or say here.

To be honest donnacha, If i was to get my 4 year old an android device , it'll be a cheap tablet. They would get more enjoyment out of that. Is there any particular reason you want to get him a smaller device?

Hi Aristotle. Thanks for the advice. I guess I'm not making an assumption that he'll find the tablet too big - its more that I know he likes playing with my S3 or my ipod touch more than he does the tablet devices we already have in the house.

The more I research its dawning on me that there is no real Android competition to an iPod touch. The galaxy player seems plagued with issues and though there is a refurbished model on Amazon I think I'll pass on it for now.

Thanks for the futeko link - gonna do some research on that.

There is some "inbetween" devices that could work, they're basically rip off designs of the PSP but is actually just a 5" tablet with game controls at the side. The main problem though is that it's a resistive screen which might not be the easiest for a 4yr old to use.

Thanks again Aristotle. Went with the Eken GT70X - ordered on Thurs night, shipped Friday, arrived via PM last night. Nice little tablet and a much better build than the Allwinner one I'd got the daughter back in Feb. The young fella will be delighted on his birthday.
