If the policies been cancelled you'll have to buy a new one. They'll return your ncb certificate. Its likely they won't accept installments from you in future too, so you might be better going elsewhere.

And ignore the bolox above

Ring them straight away and see if you can sort this out. Every ins co asks whether you have ever had a policy cancelled on the application form, so you might well have trouble even getting a quote elsewhere.

give them a ring and tell them what happened. They will probably take what they are owed and let the policy continue.

Try sort it out with them op. You dont want to have to tick that box for ever more.
I'll say this, they must have it good if they can carry on like that. Most other businesses would be way more accommodating of little mistakes like that. Insurance companies must be rolling in it!!

Not paying isn't viewed as a 'little mistake' by any business I've heard of.

I have found them a shower of b....

They cancelled a friends with 2 months; his own fault of course; though being reasonable, the man offered to pay up, but nope, they left him short a years no claims, and tagged his record that he'd had a policy canceled.

    Only 2 months to go.

Same with me. Never had an issue. In fact they went out if their way to solve an issue I had.

OP got no letter to say "It appears you are not paying your monthly payments. Would you mind sorting it out" or words to that effect. That would have been an altogether more reasonable approach, given the long repercussions of something so minor. I have received a letter like that before and there was no drama. It wasnt car ins though. Maybe this is something that only happens with car ins?
OP now has to tick that horrible bastid of a box for how long now? Years?

I'd be very surprised if a registered letter hadn't gone to the address on file.

OP was away for three weeks, it's likely the letter is there amidst all the junk!

I and the OH have been with AXA for a few years, no problems ever with them

They give you 30 days notice with a registered letter after they send you a reminder after 2 weeks. So you have about 6weeks to sort it out. Are you sure it is too late already?

[edit]meant to add this first time [/edit]
It might be better to go into one of their branches and speak face to face. It's easier for you to persuade someone and harder for them to refuse you when you're right there.

Failing to pay your motor insurance instalments on time is not minor, it's a serious breach of the agreed contract (the bit where you promise to pay on time) and can have serious consequences resulting in the policy being cancelled in accordance with the contract terms and the law.
Motor insurance is a legal obligation if you want to drive in a public place and insurers must pay out in the event of a claim against an active policy which, I suspect, is why insurers don't tolerate defaults.
