Pro V1s "going off"

Has anyone ever heard of golf balls "going off"? Specifically Titleist Pro V1s.

I used some previously unused Pro V1s at the weekend (which were around 7 years old) and my drives were only going 75% of their normal distance.

Were there kept in the freezer and defrosted properly because if not they can go off alright?

No no, you're getting confused, unless you're thinking he was hitting frozen balls?

The main problem with freezing them is that you should never freeze them twice, once you've defrosted them that's it, you gotta use them. You can't throw them back in the freezer, they'll go off for sure.

OP, were you still driving them better than Tiger?

I find that after seven years sitting on them, they'll probably never hatch...

Even driving at 75% this lad and his 12 handicapper mates can drive better than the man who won by 7 shots last weekend against a stellar field.

I doubt there'll be a reply anywhere on this thread that my post wont cover AJ!

Don't post in his threads then.

No more "helpful" replies please lads.

I play off 5 and I'm not a particularly good driver of the ball.

However, I stand by my view that ONE of my friends who plays off 12 is a more consistent driver of the ball than the "scared to use the driver / miss fairways by 60 yards" incarnation of Tiger Woods that we frequently see. The guy in question is a former hockey player, hits it 290 for fun, can land it on a sixpence but unfortunately has a short game like Christy Brown. If the guy in question could chip and putt, he'd be playing in the West of Ireland.

Non-sarcastic and actually helpful response on the way :)

How long do golf balls last? What conditions should they be stored under to maximize life span?

Today's Titleist golf balls can be safely stored for five years or even more, as long as they're kept away from excessive heat. Attics and cars, for example, can get very hot during the summer and can dramatically shorten a ball's life. Normal indoor conditions should be fine for storage.
You should also consider that golf ball technology is improving rapidly, so if you're playing balls that were made more than a couple of years ago, you may be missing out on improvements that have been made to that model, not to mention completely new models.

It's incredible really - I know 12 handicappers that are better drivers than Woods.

Bit of a difference between the two statements IMO.

    How so?

Or are you just looking to have a pointless argument?

    The statements are consistent.

I know a 12 handicaper who is, in my view, generally a better driver of the ball than the Tiger Woods that we have seen in recent years (scared to use the driver, missing fairways by 60 yards, etc).

I'm not looking for any argument. I am just saying there is a difference between saying you know 12 handicappers who can do 1 thing and saying you know 1 specific 12 handicapper who can do one thing.

    You are nit picking.

I said that I know "12 handicappers" and I was pilloried for it.

Now I've elaborated and you're coming up with a "one I accept but multiple...no way" counter argument.

..........and we're going back on topic about balls going off etc.............

I've often heard players saying that lake balls are not as near as good as some secondhand balls as lying in the water for any long period has to damage them.
Also my brother in law (who only plays a few times a year) produced some kind of balls recently that can only be described as off coloured rocks. There was something definitely off with them when i was chipping a few around the garden.

I played a causal round with a mate (very infrequent golfer) recently I was searching for his ball...what are you playing I asked.... Red Stripe Range was his reply :D

I found it, battered, bruised and years old....he lost absolutely no distance each time he duffed it :)

I couldn't hold onto a Pro V1 for 7 holes myself, let alone 7 years.

Interesting Question. I was playing with a Prov1 today, looked perfect but if you put a brand new one beside it, then it looked slightly off colour. Anyway found a brand new Prov1X (the new ones with the grey arrows). Decided to play with that & maybe it was just physological but it seemed to handle much better, go longer straighter etc. (not that I would pay €4 for a golf ball)
