I've watched and read a handful of tutorials but I can't seem to get it work. I download the root file, I turn the phone off and go into recovery mode, I click on "apply update from SD card" but there isn't a download folder to get the file from? Also, in yellow text at the bottom of the screen it says... -- Appling…

Not too sure TBH.

Maybe the file has to be in the root directory of the SD card ?

There is a large thread on XDA about rooting this phone (You've most likely seen this already)
